From the moment I walked into Wayne’s shop, I was in awe of the colour, creativity and innovativeness of the brain behind the edible baking goodies in the array of bottles that filled the shelves. On meeting him it became clear I had met a somewhat of a unique sugar genie in the suppliers of cake decor world. How then was I to say thank you to Wayne for this new world of colour on his birthday? Behind his passion and dedication to hard work in putting out his products, comes a great deal of thought and Rodin’s The Thinker, immediately came to mind as the perfect character for Wayne’s The Thinker in Colour Cake.
As he has a wicked sense of humour, I knew it would be ok to create a somewhat cheeky character as my take on The Thinker and into my head popped the idea of a book filled with ideas and it’s tongue in cheek title…50 Shades of…Colour. My sugar character shows this man baring his thoughts and ideas to the world and contemplating what creation to bake next from his recipe book. I had to include the edible printed pages from his website as being privileged to photograph and show off Wayne’s creations is such fun and he throws out constant challenges which have thrown me on to a steep and fun learning curve with regard to both my passion for photography and challenging myself in ‘outside of the box’ thinking!
Finally his wild abandon for colour had to be part of this cake and I chose this edible print with its burst of colour and pattern as the cover for the book. The layererd sugar paste flower with its non pareiled centre was inspired again by the colourful world I have been introduced to and to represent the beautiful sugar paste flowers and matching pearls he and his ladies create for his customers. Thanks Wayne for something so new in my world of baking and thanks for the craziness and laughs along the way!
As I was about to deliver the cake, Beauty, the lady who works for me looked at the cake , smiled and said “this man looks like he thinks too much”! She completely hit the nail on the head with that comment!
