Staying with Lime Green for a Bit!

Lime Green & Pink Cupcakes

Lime Green & Pink Cupcakes

Jeanine is a new cupcake client I met while scrapbooking at the Memory Shed http://www.memoryshed.blogspot.com/ towards the end of last year.  Jeanine had seen cupcakes I had brought in for another order and I was so pleased when she called me and ordered these cupcakes for a friend of hers who was celebrating her 50th birthday this past weekend.   The pink butterflies, lime green and pink flowers and pink roses were a perfect choice  as the variety made for a perfectly pretty display.  They are displayed here on another stand that Russell Gibson made for me.  A must have cupcake stand in any bakers collection: http://www.cmwi.co.za/

I loved that Jeanine went for a different flavoured cupcake and these Pistachio and Rosewater Cupcakes are delicious and I am sure the guests were surprised by these fragrantly flavoured cupcakes.  Thanks Jeanine for your thank you message saying you couldn’t stop looking at the cupcakes that was an awesome compliment.

Cupcakes for my Blogging Guru!

I know Wendy won’t mind me calling her my blogging guru because firstly blogging is one of her many passions and secondly my blog would not exist if it was not for her extreme patience in introducing me to the wonderful world of blogging and teaching me how to use the themes and tools on Word Press.  One of my aims this year is not only to keep baking gorgeous cupcakes but also to become more adept at my blogging skills. Thanks Wendy for always being at the other end of the phone for all my questions and for all your time and ideas in setting up my blog.

Wendy celebrated her birthday in January and I wanted to make her some cupcakes she hadn’t seen me bake or blog yet.  It was great when she let me know about the Cupcake Tower challenge on Foodnetwork, and when she said she rather fancied the key lime and mango cupcakes of one of the competitors, it gave me the idea to try them.  With no recipe available I experimented with these cupcakes for Wendy.  My vanilla cupcake recipe has proved the most successful so far and I have adapted this single recipe into so many different flavour recipes so I started with the basic vanilla cupcake recipe to which I added small gooey pieced of chopped mango.  Be prepared when working with mangoes to get sticky fingers and work surfaces as they are rich, gooey and juicy when you cut into them and they are not as well behaved as apples and pears on a cutting board.  The mango pieces need to be folded really gently into the cupcake batter so as to hold their shape while baking.  I added lime juice and zest to taste and baked them in dinky lime green and white polka dot cupcake holders.

As you can see this baking took a lot longer as I was so excited by the beautiful contrast of the lime and mango colours I had to photograph my ingredients before they even made it into the cupcakes.  My Joseph Joseph cutting board and measuring bowls provided the perfect backdrop to these colourful fruits in my photos and of course my new camera (soon to be blogged too) took the perfect photos for me to blog.

For a fruity frosting on the cupcake I made a mango and lime syrup which I reduced until thick and added this to my cream cheese icing.  I used a little of the remaining syrup and lime zest to decorate the cupcakes.

Thanks Wendy for going the extra mile to help me in my new business and hope you enjoyed your Key Lime and Mango cupcakes.

Cerise Pink Daisy Wedding Cupcakes

Cerise Pink Daisy Wedding Cupcakes

What more could a bride ask for than these gorgeous bright pink daisy cupcakes for her wedding day?  I chose bright pink, orange and yellow to give a brilliant contrast to the black and white cupcake holders I use for so many of my cupcakes.  These colours are the inspiration from a true African summer.  The  flat and shaped daisies and flowers I made using a bright pink sugar paste and added the orange and yellow centres, some repeating the daisy pattern and others with a rolled rose for the centre.  The result is a beautiful array of cupcakes almost too pretty to eat…….but definitely too tasty not to eat!

On Monday I took a short road trip to Edenvale to order my new cupcake stands – promise to post these in my next couple of posts.  While I was there I visited the Chocolate Den in Edenvale and this was a blast from the past for me as it was my most frequented shops about 15 years ago when I was making and selling chocolate lollies.  It was brilliant to be back in their newly revamped shop, yet another Aladdin’s Cave for me!   On my to-do list for 2012 is to explore different flavours for my cupcakes and I was so pleased to see that the Chocolate Den had a range of different and yummy smelling flavourings.  Needless to say a few of these somehow made their way into my shopping basket and I couldn’t wait to try them out.

I baked these lavender cupcakes for our first day back at scrapping at the Memory Shed and the girls were happy to be my tasters once again and everyone agreed that these cupcakes were really tasty.  They had a subtle taste of lavender in the cupcakes itself  and then a creamy lavender taste in the icing as I added lavender petals to the icing.  I made pretty lavender coloured sugar paste flowers as cupcake toppers.

Chinese New Year Cupcakes

If you are one of those party animals who celebrated this New Year taking every time zone into consideration and celebrating remembering friends in different parts of the world and drinking to their health as the world clocks changed to midnight in each country, then you can use the Chinese New Year to celebrate once again.  On Monday 23rd January 2012 the Chinese will celebrate their new year and herald in the Year of the Dragon.  Now before you get excited and think that I have overnight become as brilliant as Buddy from the Cake Boss and made amazing dragon cupcakes, remember I have a looooong way to go still as far as creativity goes (watch this spot next year though)!

One of the foods that will bring good luck for the Chinese New Year is noodles.  Noodles are traditionally eaten in Chinese soups and stir-fries and they represent longevity.  When I read this I thought how apt this meaning is for them.  My mouth purses as I think of trying to eat long noodles as elegantly as possible (and never really succeeding).  I have another way to bring in good luck for the Chinese New Year with noodles and that is with my ‘Oodles of Noodles’ cupcakes.  This is a sweet and definitely less messy way of eating your noodles. I iced chocolate cupcakes using a ‘grass’ nozzle which shaped the icing into noodles.  My chopsticks are 2 toothpicks.

Chinese lanterns, used in many Chinese celebrations, represent the fears or worries of a person being carried away by the wind.  They again are a symbol of good wishes and it is easy to see how they represent good luck as they float away with all our troubles.  They are quite beautiful and ethereal in their lightness.  In South Africa during our own New Year celebrations hundreds of  these lanterns were released into our inky skies in a bid to celebrate New Year in a more environmentally friendly way.  Well done to the places that allowed only the release of lanterns in place of the noisy and smokey launching of fireworks!  Next time you see a lit lantern floating away on the breeze your heart can feel a little lighter as you wave goodbye to life’s worries.   These cupcakes should be knicknamed ‘worry free cupcakes’ then as they have a pretty little Chinese lantern on them.  I know that when I am eating these  life becomes infinitely sweeter!

Life is Sweet!

Thanks to Disney these lanterns have gained more popularity as we watched Rapunzel’s parents release hundreds of lanterns as a sign of love and hope for their missing daughter in Disney’s ‘ Tangled’.

Lastly and definitely not fierce and fiery at all are the Chinese blossoms that are nature’s representation of the ” ephemeral nature and intensity of life”.  My blossoms on these cupcakes then can again remind us of how fragile life is and how we need to treasure it in this year 2012.

I wish you all  a year in which you embrace life with the fierce intensity and passion of the dragon, the lightness and grace of the Chinese Lantern and the gentleness and beauty of the Chinese blossom……and I will throw in a few cupcakes of course for sweetness!

New Beginnings

It was so exciting when a cupcake customer from last year called me and gave me my first order of the year for 2012.  It could not have been more appropriate as her order was for cupcakes for a baby shower.  Last year I made gorgeous “hen” party cupcakes for a client and it was such a compliment when this order came through for baby shower cupcakes for the new-mom-to-be.  Wow my cupcakes are becoming a part of different peoples life celebrations and that makes me feel so privileged and excited.  It was also great to eventually meet Sue, who ordered the cupcakes, as she was as excited about the delightful blue and white baby boy sugar art decorations as I was.

I made baby prams, baby-gros, babies feet, bottles and rattles using baby blue and white sugar paste.  The little sugared balls are now available in nearly every colour you can dream of and I sprinkled a few on to complete the cupcakes.

These little feet just make these cupcakes perfect for a baby shower and I wish the new mom all the joy in the world as she gets to know and love her new baby boy, may she have many happy moments watching and gently kissing his precious toes.  May her baby’s feet grow strong and take her little boy on many brilliant adventures in his life!
