On Monday I took a short road trip to Edenvale to order my new cupcake stands – promise to post these in my next couple of posts.  While I was there I visited the Chocolate Den in Edenvale and this was a blast from the past for me as it was my most frequented shops about 15 years ago when I was making and selling chocolate lollies.  It was brilliant to be back in their newly revamped shop, yet another Aladdin’s Cave for me!   On my to-do list for 2012 is to explore different flavours for my cupcakes and I was so pleased to see that the Chocolate Den had a range of different and yummy smelling flavourings.  Needless to say a few of these somehow made their way into my shopping basket and I couldn’t wait to try them out.

I baked these lavender cupcakes for our first day back at scrapping at the Memory Shed and the girls were happy to be my tasters once again and everyone agreed that these cupcakes were really tasty.  They had a subtle taste of lavender in the cupcakes itself  and then a creamy lavender taste in the icing as I added lavender petals to the icing.  I made pretty lavender coloured sugar paste flowers as cupcake toppers.

Chinese New Year Cupcakes

If you are one of those party animals who celebrated this New Year taking every time zone into consideration and celebrating remembering friends in different parts of the world and drinking to their health as the world clocks changed to midnight in each country, then you can use the Chinese New Year to celebrate once again.  On Monday 23rd January 2012 the Chinese will celebrate their new year and herald in the Year of the Dragon.  Now before you get excited and think that I have overnight become as brilliant as Buddy from the Cake Boss and made amazing dragon cupcakes, remember I have a looooong way to go still as far as creativity goes (watch this spot next year though)!

One of the foods that will bring good luck for the Chinese New Year is noodles.  Noodles are traditionally eaten in Chinese soups and stir-fries and they represent longevity.  When I read this I thought how apt this meaning is for them.  My mouth purses as I think of trying to eat long noodles as elegantly as possible (and never really succeeding).  I have another way to bring in good luck for the Chinese New Year with noodles and that is with my ‘Oodles of Noodles’ cupcakes.  This is a sweet and definitely less messy way of eating your noodles. I iced chocolate cupcakes using a ‘grass’ nozzle which shaped the icing into noodles.  My chopsticks are 2 toothpicks.

Chinese lanterns, used in many Chinese celebrations, represent the fears or worries of a person being carried away by the wind.  They again are a symbol of good wishes and it is easy to see how they represent good luck as they float away with all our troubles.  They are quite beautiful and ethereal in their lightness.  In South Africa during our own New Year celebrations hundreds of  these lanterns were released into our inky skies in a bid to celebrate New Year in a more environmentally friendly way.  Well done to the places that allowed only the release of lanterns in place of the noisy and smokey launching of fireworks!  Next time you see a lit lantern floating away on the breeze your heart can feel a little lighter as you wave goodbye to life’s worries.   These cupcakes should be knicknamed ‘worry free cupcakes’ then as they have a pretty little Chinese lantern on them.  I know that when I am eating these  life becomes infinitely sweeter!

Life is Sweet!

Thanks to Disney these lanterns have gained more popularity as we watched Rapunzel’s parents release hundreds of lanterns as a sign of love and hope for their missing daughter in Disney’s ‘ Tangled’.

Lastly and definitely not fierce and fiery at all are the Chinese blossoms that are nature’s representation of the ” ephemeral nature and intensity of life”.  My blossoms on these cupcakes then can again remind us of how fragile life is and how we need to treasure it in this year 2012.

I wish you all  a year in which you embrace life with the fierce intensity and passion of the dragon, the lightness and grace of the Chinese Lantern and the gentleness and beauty of the Chinese blossom……and I will throw in a few cupcakes of course for sweetness!

New Beginnings

It was so exciting when a cupcake customer from last year called me and gave me my first order of the year for 2012.  It could not have been more appropriate as her order was for cupcakes for a baby shower.  Last year I made gorgeous “hen” party cupcakes for a client and it was such a compliment when this order came through for baby shower cupcakes for the new-mom-to-be.  Wow my cupcakes are becoming a part of different peoples life celebrations and that makes me feel so privileged and excited.  It was also great to eventually meet Sue, who ordered the cupcakes, as she was as excited about the delightful blue and white baby boy sugar art decorations as I was.

I made baby prams, baby-gros, babies feet, bottles and rattles using baby blue and white sugar paste.  The little sugared balls are now available in nearly every colour you can dream of and I sprinkled a few on to complete the cupcakes.

These little feet just make these cupcakes perfect for a baby shower and I wish the new mom all the joy in the world as she gets to know and love her new baby boy, may she have many happy moments watching and gently kissing his precious toes.  May her baby’s feet grow strong and take her little boy on many brilliant adventures in his life!

My New Year’s Baby Turns 18!

New Years Day, 18 years ago, turned out to be one of the most amazing days of my life. It was the day that my son, Teigh, came into this world and completely changed our lives.  Every day since then has been an awesome day just because he is around.  Ok before all the soppy bits there were many funny bits about that morning as both Eddie and I had enjoyed a brilliant late New Year’s Eve celebration.  I had had a few Irish coffees to bring in the New Year – the South African one and then the Irish one.  Ok call in the Pregnancy Police as yes in those days it was not yet a diet of lentils and water in order to ensure you gave birth to a genius of a baby!  Eddie had had more than just a few Irish coffees so he was not really that excited when he was woken with the words “I think it is time to go to the hospital”.  He came round to the excitement until I told him not to breath anywhere near the nurses.  Teigh should have been born a Leo and not a Capricorn as he announced his arrival with an almighty howling and just to remind us he was around he carried on for another few months.  From the first moment I held him I knew he was just an amazing gift from God and still wonder daily why Eddie and I were chosen to be his parents.  We obviously did quite a good job though as we were chosen again when our beautiful daughter Ceire was born a few years later.

Teigh turned 18 on New Years Day this year and he is now an incredibly handsome, gentle-natured and intelligent young man, (yes can you believe it he came out a genius in spite of those Irish coffees)!  He has been a joy to have around for the last 18 years and his love and zest for life along with his sense of humour have made him not only a brilliant son but also a great friend to those who have got to know him.  Thanks Teigh for coming into our lives in such a fun way and for making our lives richer and more fun.

Now for those of you who think it is cool to be a New Year’s Baby, yes it has its advantages as in every birthday will always be a public holiday but this may not be the best as everyone is sleeping off the night before, well everyone except for me who is trying to rustle up a birthday cake.  Have you ever tried to buy/order a cake for New Years Day? Not the easiest, probably the reason why I got into baking all those years ago – we have Teigh again to thank for all these cakes and cupcakes today!  This New Year was no different as I was on holiday without my kitchen and baking goodies and Eddie would have had a minor heart attack if I had tried to pack anymore into the car.  What we did have though were meringue nests from Spar, ice-cream and loads of goodies to add to it, a view second to none from our 6th floor apartment in Ballito and all our family to celebrate Teigh’s birthday with him, who could ask for anything more!

Teigh loves the Christmas ice-cream I make every Christmas Eve so I made it again for his birthday ‘cupcakes’.  I chopped a bar of mint chocolate, a packet of tumbles, a handful of choc chip biscuits, chocolate coated cranberries (or cherries) and almonds (any nuts are ok too) and I mixed them all into  slightly softened ice-cream and then popped it back into the freezer to set.  To serve I put the ice-cream into the bought meringue nests and then popped 2 hazelnut chocolate biscuits on top for decoration.  Not too bad for a holiday birthday cupcake.

Of course the cupcake would not be complete until it had been photographed not easy when you are holding it out on a 6th floor balcony under the African Sun in 30 deg heat to try and get the sea in the background to complement the cupcake.

Teigh and everyone loved his birthday cupcakes and here’s to my 18 year old, I am so delighted to have shared these past years as your mom and so proud to be able to call you my son.

Black & Gold Bachelorette Cupcakes

I hope Katy Perry’s lyrics are what this bride-to-be sang when she saw these cupcakes my client ordered for her bachelorette party as they turned out quite delightful with their black and gold decorations.  The black flowers & top hat were simple to cut out from black sugar paste and I finished the flowers with a small gold ball for a pretty centre.  The gold bottles, flowers, bride’s veil and martini glasses I made with white sugar paste which I then painted gold.  Thanks to the Rolkem demo I attended earlier in the year this was really easy.  The gold Rolkem powder has to be mixed with Quick Dry and then it is easily painted onto any dry sugar paste decoration.  I bought the bikinis in pinks and yellows which did not fit the colour theme so that was quickly rectified by painting them gold.

What a way to end such an awesome year of cupcake orders with this cupcake request for cream and chocolate brown cupcakes for a wedding party.  Thanks Liza for recommending me to Karen and Rob to do their cupcakes for them today and I hope the cupcakes do justice to all your planning for a beautiful wedding party.  I have baked countless vanilla and chocolate cupcakes this year with these flavours being the most popular and it was brilliant to be able to combine vanilla and chocolate cupcakes with cream and chocolate icing and decorations.  I iced the chocolate cupcakes with a rich chocolate cream cheese icing laced with Midnight Velvet melted chocolate for an extra kick of cocoa.  To complement the rich chocolate icing I made cream sugarpaste roses, butterflies, flowers and daisies to complete the cream and chocolate combination.   I love the way the small pearls nestle on these chocolate cupcakes.

The vanilla cupcakes I iced with a vanilla cream cheese icing and for contrast I made brown roses, butterflies, flowers and daisies.  I was delighted with the finished cupcakes and I hope that Karen and Rob have a brilliant celebration today with their friends and family and have fun eating these cupcakes.
