Swimming & Yachting Themed Cake

Swimming & Yachting CakeHeather ordered this cake for her daughter Justine and Justine’s  friend Ane. Both girls share a birthday and were having a combined celebration for their 18th birthday before each of them head off to different parts of the world to explore their passions. Justine is leaving shortly for Alabama University to study and continue her swimming training there so I depicted Justine’s figurine wearing her full swimsuit, blue cap and goggles and included a red ‘Alabama’ towel and red lane marker for her new university.  Ane’s figurine has dreadlocks and is wearing a hippie dress and headband and is holding her sugar paste rope ready for her yachting adventure this year.

I placed both figurines on the one cake and added pool tiles for Justine at the top of the cake, life buoys, water edging and droplets for both the girls and waves kissing the edges of the cake from the board for Ane. Good luck to you both, Justine and Ane, the world is your oyster and I wish you all the best for the most awesome adventures this year!

Minnie Mouse Cake!

When Mercedes had her first birthday her mom, Zanele, ordered her a pretty pink Minnie Mouse Cake for her special celebration. The cake was a two tier cake with the bottom tier decorated with a pink polka dot skirt with a frilled underlay and the top tier decorated with tiny Minnie faces and a large polka dot pink bow and Minnie ears to complete it. I added Mercedes name and a 1 to the board and it turned out to be a delightful little girls cake. Little girls are not just made of sugar and spice  but also of  bows, frills and dots and all things nice!

Cradlestone Mall First Birthday Competition

Beach Themed Cake

Last year I entered my first cake competition with this little beach themed cake.  Cradlestone Mall were celebrating their first birthday and they hosted among the first year celebrations a cake competition. Entries were open to all bakers and the cakes were judged and then either auctioned or sold off by the slice and all proceeds went to charity.  I made this petite Beach Girl Figurine in her lime green bikini top and lacy skirt and placed her on my vanilla sponge cake that was covered in layers of pale cream fondant and blue waved fondant. Beach bronzed sugar crystals were perfect for the sand for her to sit on and  sugar paste shells and frangipani flowers completed the fun summer beach theme. I moulded soft blue waves on the board of the cake that gently kissed the bottom of the cake and dotted the waves with tiny white sugar pearls and sugar paste shells.

Olaf Frozen Cake

Olaf Frozen CakeWith all the excitement of the release of the movie Frozen, cake decorators everywhere are inundated with Frozen cake orders. I was excited to do this cake for Taylin’s 2nd birthday as she asked her mom for Olaf on the Beach for her birthday cake.  Sandy sent me a picture of a similar cake and I changed the colours and figurine to suit my beach design adding waves on the board splashing up the side of the cake onto the beach where Olaf is in his element wearing his nifty sunglasses. Olaf’s floral garland I made by cutting loads of tiny blossoms, glueing them together and then draping them around Olaf’s neck. I added glittered snowflakes among the waves and on the beach and then used the snowflakes as the decoration for the matching Frozen Cupcakes. The most rewarding moment was when Taylin’s mom Sandy told me that her youngest daughter actually kissed Olaf when she saw the cake arriving.

Tennis Cake for Byron’s 21st!

Tennis Figurine on Tennis Ball CakeByron's Tennis Cake2

It has been an exciting year for 21st birthdays and Byron’s Tennis Cake was a 21st birthday cake I created earlier this year for his celebration with his family.  I have know Byron for a few years now and it was great to be able to make a small sugar figurine and try and capture some of his characteristics. Of course the easy ones were his dark good looks, thick curly dark hair and 5 O’Clock shadow typical of all students these days!  Wendy, his mom, asked me to do a tennis themed cake as this is one of Byron’s incredible talents and passions in life.  I placed the Byron sugar figurine sitting on a delicious chocolate tennis ball cake which I covered in a mix of fondant and modelling chocolate and embossed to create a tennis ball texture.  I also created the line and then painted it with white edible paint and added small moulded tennis racquets and grass to finish off the cake.  It was such fun making this cake Byron and congratulations on your 21st birthday and you can be proud of how you have taken your talents and passions into your varsity life and continued to be an inspiration to and admired by all those who meet you.

Pirate-Tess Cake!

Pirate-Tess Cake

Pirate-Tess is one of my favourite figurines and I made her during one of Vicci Clemitson-Martin’s classes last year.  It was a whole new experience to work with such exquisite quality sugar paste from Italy for the first time and to see the difference in the quality of the figurine that could be produced. A chef always chooses the finest ingredients and we certainly had one fine ingredient in this sugar paste we used! Pirate-Tess not only turned out to be a funky and cheeky pirate in her black boots and embossed bodice but also beautiful with her hair, skirt & flirty eyelashes being kissed by the sea breeze on her wooden deck cake.

Kissed By The Breeze!

I completed my cake with a ruffled red flower with a beaded golden centre, an edible rice paper treasure map and soft blue waves teasing the sides of the deck looking for a better look at the sexy Pirate-Tess.

Sugared-Treasure!

A gold satin roped cord was a perfect finish to the cake board and tiny pearls and white beads added to the effect of the waves to allow Pirate-Tess to stand tall and proud on her sugared deck!
