Karel and Amanda were married early in September in the tranquil and beautiful grounds of Glen Afric with their close family and friends and of course the gentle company of the Glen Afric wild life. It was a complete surprise for me that I was able watch as this wonderful couple arrived to their reception set out in the shaded gardens of Glen Afric. They were accompanied by a mother elephant and her 2 babies who then stood and fed quietly as the couple had photographs taken with their guests. What a peaceful way to begin a wedding celebration.

From the moment I met Karel and Amanda at our first ‘cake consultation’, I knew that taking part in their celebration would be perfect. It did help that they were both enticed by my cupcake testers with their pretty heart toppers and that they loved the idea of being represented in sugar on their wedding cake. They were a fun couple to reproduce in sugar, Karel strong and dapper in his wedding suit and cream cravat and Amanda petite in her beautiful white rouched lace wedding dress and gorgeous blonde curls. They sat very happily on their wedding cake iced to suit the natural theme of their wedding.

Wishing this special couple many years of holding each other’s hands, sharing gentle loving gestures and laughter as they start this exciting chapter in their lives.

The matching cupcakes I iced with a dreamy coffee buttercream swirl and added the sugar paste embossed hearts and rolled roses that Amanda chose in cream and burgundy. Tiny non pareils and dragees sprinkled into the folds of the buttercream completed the look of the cupcakes and  Champagne pearls added the final touch around the bottom of the cake. Dainty filigree cupcake holders were perfect for these cupcakes which I placed tiered below the cake on a natural log stand. Thank you Karel and Amanda for trusting me on your wedding day and for being such a delightful couple to create for.

Wedding Cake for Elize & Alan

Peggy Porschen inspired Wedding Cake

When Elize and Alan first asked me to make their wedding cake I was really nervous as I had not before undertaken a 3 tier wedding cake let alone did I have the first clue about making sugar flowers for a wedding cake.  They knew they wanted a tiered wedding cake with a cascade of flowers, hearts and doves.  The initial pictures they showed me were a little old fashioned and not exciting enough for this brilliant couple so I suggested one of Peggy Porschen’s cakes from her Cakes In Bloom book.  Both Elize and Alan were excited about the cake I showed them and asked for a few colour and flower changes and the addition of doves and hearts as they were to be part of the theme of their beautifully planned wedding.  All that was left to me was to learn how to make sugar flowers which I did with the help of my wonderful friend and teacher Pat of Cakes by Pat and with the help of the step by step instructions in Peggy’s book.

The pictures in the collages below show my packing on the day of the wedding with everything ready to take to the venue to set up this floral cake.

I was so delighted with how this cake finally came together after many hours of patient flower making and I had such a sense of pride in creating my first wedding cake of this size and with these detailed flowers.  Elize and Alan were so delighted with their cake and I will include a blog with photos of them cutting their cake taken by their awesome wedding photographer. Everyone commented on how real the flowers looked and how delicious the cake tasted and this was the best compliment to me.  I am so grateful to Elize and Alan for trusting me with their cake and I am so privileged to know such a loving and beautiful couple and to have had the chance to create something beautiful to add to their special day.
