This Gorilla Backpack Cake was inspired by Shaunagh’s excitement prior to her going to see the gorillas in Uganda for her birthday this August and by Grace Stevens delightful African Explorer Cake in her first book, Celebration Cakes. I haven’t done many carved cakes so it was a new challenge to take on this cake. With the clear instructions from Grace’s book it was a fun baking project and I was chuffed with the way it turned out for Shaunagh’s birthday celebration. The sugar gorilla figurine I added next to the backpack as a fun element for Shaunagh before she left to visit the beautiful gorillas. Luckily Shaunagh returned with no wildlife in her backpack and only perfect pictures to record the memories that she would treasure of her visit to Uganda.

Ballet Rocks Denim Figurine for Ceire’s Sweet 16th!
The petite really cute baby I gave birth to 16 years ago turns Sweet 16 today! Congratulations Ceire and thank you for 16 years of fun, laughter and joy with you! I love the zest for life and quirky craziness you bring into our lives every day. Wishing you the best day ever and enjoy being totally spoilt with all your pressies and your Ballet Rocks Denim cake! This figurine was inspired by your lovely long legs and the ballet part is a thank you to you for all the hours you spent dancing and giving us such joy with youir grace and beauty on stage. The denim is inspired by your love for denim jeans and shorts (hence the denim shorts cake with the added lace you love) and your funky swagger in everything denim, you know how to rock whatever you are wearing and we love you for it. Not sure if these shoes are quite as awesome as your new Nikes and Converse shoes but couldn’t resist adding them for some fun to your figurine and of course the laces are not done up in memory of all the times you insisted on not tying your laces on your shoes!!! Yes I remember! I hope I captured everything beautiful about you from your legs to your hair to your pretty face and most of all I hope I captured your zany character and zest for life!
Wendy Fairy & Cupcakes
I couldn’t resist this dainty turquoise teacup with the pale blue lotus-looking flower design nestled on the inside of the cup for my inspiration for my Wendy Fairy Figurine. Wendy B celebrated her birthday last Wednesday and as she is another passionate Cupcakes2Delite fan I thought I would surprise her with this gift of a Wendy Fairy. I made the fairy sitting prettily in the teacup in shades of pale turquoise and blue as these are Wendy’s favourite colours. She is holding a blue lotus flower with a tiny gold speckled centre (to pick up the gold edged detail of the cup and saucer) showing off her gorgeous wavy brunette curls and warm friendly smile! It was so great to see Wendy wearing a turquoise top on the morning of her birthday as she matched her sugar sister to perfection, smile, curls and all. Wendy’s cupcakes had to be sugar paste covered of course being her absolute favourite so I embossed different sugar paste designs onto scalloped circles before adding them to the tasty vanilla cupcakes. Each one I topped off with a dainty rouched sugar paste flower and beaded centre. As always your excitement about my work Wendy was brilliant and I was really touched at how delighted you were with your sugar fairy sister!
Birthday Cake for a Baker
Jeanine is another client of mine who is passionate about the cupcakes and cakes that I make and as she has an appreciation for all things beautiful this cake had to be extra pretty. Jeanine ordered a cake for her daughter’s 30th birthday celebration and as she is a baker I thought it would be cool to add baking goodies to the top of her cake. The miniature eggs in their egg box, the cupcakes and the cake are all sugar paste and I used pastel colours to match the colour scheme for the birthday. To get the silver shimmer of the baking tray I dusted the finished tray with a Rolkem lustre powder before adding the tiny cupcakes with their sprinkled tops. I finished the cake off with layers of pastel pink and blue ruffles and a pretty embossed pink apron.
This message from Jeanine makes all the weekend hours worth it: “Thanks a million AGAIN! The cake was beyond my expectation – absolutely beautiful and I can SO appreciate the love, passion and work that you put into it! ” I was so touched at your reaction to seeing the cake when you collected it and delighted that I could add to your daughter’s 30th birthday celebration!
Ballet & Rock Bride & Groom!
This post is long overdue as I made this sugar couple for Rezelle and Dion who got married in a wonderfully romantic service a couple of months ago. They chose as the theme for their wedding Ballet versus Rock as Rezelle has had a passion for ballet since she could walk and Dion is a talented musician and performer and loves his music. It was amazing to be a part of this special couple’s wedding in making their cake topper and the wedding cupcakes and then being invited with my family to celebrate their wedding service and reception with them. I had tremendous fun creating these two characters to resemble Rezelle and Dion and I was delighted with their reaction on seeing their wedding cake topper. The cupcakes I made in bright and pale pastels to match the colour scheme of the day. What awesome families you two have and how perfectly they each helped in their own way to make your day memorable.
I photographed the Ballet and Rock bride and groom as they sat comfortably on their beautiful wedding cake made for Rezelle and Dion by Sarah of Sugar Cookie Cakes. Sarah had designed the wedding cake with a cascade of rainbow roses from the top to the bottom tier and the sugar Rezelle and Dion were a perfect topper to such a beautiful cake. I wish you many years filled with happiness, joy, dance and music!
Volkswagen Beetle Birthday Cake for 3 Friends!
With 3 birthdays closely following each other, Shaunagh came up with the idea to host the party for these 3 of our scrapbooking friends at her home. Not only did Shaunagh treat us to a delicious and beautifully served lunch but we had fun party entertainment provided by Lisa (TQO), an abundance of presents to be opened by the 3 birthday girls, loads of laughter and chatter, a grand meeting of Kaiser, Shaunagh’s infamous dog, and of course a cake to celebrate Lisa (TQO), Lisa, our teacher, and Tracy’s birthday. Instead of a cake each I designed a combination cake for them with a bright yellow VW beetle as the backdrop to the 3 figurines. My son was so helpful in helping me get the character of the VW right, so thanks Teigh, you always have the time to offer me advice in all my designs!
Lisa, our scrapbooking teacher, is the figurine sitting sweetly meditating in a comfortable yoga pose on top of the beetle. She is smiling serenely as she loves her yoga and pilates and knows she looks totally gorgeous with her beautiful soft blonde curls. Lisa (TQO) is the figurine with the fun, cheeky face and short funky black hair who is trying to remain sensible looking while touching her toes. This figurine is as mischievous as Lisa is in real life because she started off in a ‘downward dog ‘ pose but when her head fell off I changed her into a sitting pilates pose! Tracy of course is completely well behaved and I depicted her as a Lysianthus wedding planner fairy complete with her wedding planning books as she has had the most exciting year with both her daughter and son getting married within months of each other. She looks as pretty in her little purple dress as Tracy looked in both sets of wedding photos. Just loved celebrating with these 3 special women on my life and delighted you loved your individual figurines girl!
