Another fun order of cupcakes from Jenny meant I could experiment with colour and patterns on these Hot Air Balloon Cupcakes. The cupcakes were to celebrate her niece, Caitlyn’s, 21st birthday and her husband, Bill’s, birthday. As the birthday adventure involved an early morning hot air balloon ride, Jenny asked me to do cupcakes with this theme. I used circle cutters to cut out the balloons and then swopped out contrasting colours to create the top of the balloons. The final detail was added in the baskets and decorations and stitching on the balloons and they were a perfect sweet addition to an exciting birthday morning. Happy Birthday Caitlyn and Bill! Thanks again for your order Jenny and for the pics of the balloons in the early morning.

The Cake Boss, Buddy Show in Johannesburg!
I was chuffed to see Buddy Valastro of the Cake Boss on Friday at the Good Food and Wine Show in Johannesburg. Not only was it fun to meet his fans in the queue getting into the show but it was great to see his fun and friendly personality in action. A delightful moment was when a young fan dashed onto the stage as Buddy started his demo and Buddy gave him an impromptu hug which of course melted the hearts of his audience! Buddy created a Father’s Day Grill Cake complete with vienna sausage, cheese burger and T-bone steak and then another Bright Flowers cake pretty enough to delight any girl! Thanks for visiting Sunny South Africa Buddy and hope you had fun here!
Wedding Thank You Cupcakes
This order for these Wedding Thank You Cupcakes was another one of many orders from clients who place an order not just for cupcakes but for cupcakes made with the recipient of the cupcakes in mind. Michelle’s attention to detail in letting me know what needed to be on each cupcake was brilliant as I could create the cupcakes with a dash of individuality in order for Candy to say a huge thank you to her bridesmaids and other ladies who were involved in making her wedding day so special.
This is just the perfect thank you that any baker could receive:
” Hi Lisa
Just wanted to drop you a short note to thank you so much for the beautiful cupcakes which you made for Candy’s bridal ‘Thank You’ tea. Each one was more beautiful than its predecessor…the bridesmaids and other special ‘worker bee’ ladies absolutely loved their personalised cupcake…very few were eaten…they wanted to take them home and frame them they were so exquisite! I on the other hand ate two, thoroughly enjoyed them and kept the intricately moulded flowers and bridesmaids dress as a memory!!! Not sure if the sugar paste decorations will even survive the week as every time I look at them I am tempted to take a nibble!
Kindest regards
Michelle Panos “
Wishing you happiness Candy in your married life and I am sure there will be loads of fun and joy with such a caring and loving group of women around you from mom who took such care with this order to granny who fetched them so carefully for you and of course all the recipients of your tasty thank you treats!
Blue & Coral Ruffle Flower Cake
Brian not only surprised Helen with the Artist themed cupcakes on her 60th birthday but again the following weekend with another sweet delight in the form of this Blue & Coral Ruffled Flower Cake he ordered from me. I used the Wiltons Delphinium Blue and Rolkems Tiger Lily Food Colouring for the flowers and ruffled 4 layers of flowers before adding pearls to their centres. I used a lighter shade of these 2 colours to complete the ruffles for the cake and then nestled a few pearls here and there in the ruffle layers. Thanks Brian for giving me inspiration from Helen for the colours and for trusting me with your orders for Helen’s birthday and I was pleased to hear about the reactions to both the cupcakes and the cake!

Cupcakes for an Artist
I donned my artist’s beret to come up with these cupcake decorations for the Artist themed cupcakes that Brian ordered for his wife Helen’s 60th Birthday. I chose pastel colours and made silver paint tubes with pastel labels and paint brushes and palettes with splotches of colourful sugar pastel ‘paint’. The miniature canvases I painted with a simple flower landscape, adding the 3-D flowers with their pretty centres for effect. It was a compliment that Helen, a talented artist, loved her Artist themed cupcakes. I look forward to seeing your work Helen and I am delighted that my sugar miniatures coloured your special day in a small sweet way!
Vicci Fairy Class with Grace Stevens
November really can’t come soon enough with the launch of Grace Stevens of Cupcakesbydesign second book! This Vicci Fairy class she taught in Johannesburg is one of the delightful figurines that will feature in her new book and it was such fun taking part in this class with Grace. Fashioned after Vicci of Victoria Bean Bakery, this sugar figurine had to have really long legs finished off in funky boots. Thanks Grace for another class of fun, laughter and really awesome sugar art! I made Vicci in light brown boots and a vibrant coral petal dress and gave her funky blonde hair to match her fun character! She may be a little too sexy for a fairy but all fairies have to take time off to party and how could she not feel just that much more special dressed in her petite sugar flower petals?
