Personal Trainer Birthday Cake!

Bodybuilder Sugar ArtBodybuilder Sugar Art

Byron celebrated his birthday in February and I thought he deserved a cake as he has persevered with me through a year of hard work, sweat and motivation in order to get me resembling a fitter and healthier person rather than the ‘well rounded character’ I was this time last year.  As he is fit and disciplined himself I made him a delicious banana bread full of nuts, bananas and cranberries, all the healthy goodies! Thanks to Samantha Linsell from Drizzle and Dip.com for what has to be the best banana bread recipe ever!

This personal trainer was my first attempt at a male figure and he turned out quite cute with his naughty face, Nike shirt, Adidas shoes and of course the kettle bell and extra weights for his training session. Happy Birthday Byron and delighted you were surprised with your cake!

Note to self after making this male figure I am officially allowed to study the male form more closely and more often to get an even better result next time!

Clowning Around!

Clown Cakes

Michelle and Hayley celebrated their birthdays a week apart so we had a joint celebration at scrapbooking for them in October last year.  They are both beautiful women so fairies on the cakes would have been totally appropriate but as I was feeling more adventurous and Grace Stevens’ new book Celebration Cakes was beckoning me to try something new I bravely made these 2 clown figurines for the first time.  Not sure why I had taken so long to try something new as Grace explains and demonstrates so clearly in her book each step for every figurine.  I loved the 2 really naughty and cute clowns that I created and they were a delight sitting on their individual cakes.  Their naughty faces and bright cheerful colours were perfect for Michelle and Hayley who are bright characters in our class and always make us smile and laugh with their comments and stories.  We work hard but my title for this post “Clowning Around” can definitely be applied to many a Wednesday morning!

Wine Fairy for Wendy’s Birthday!

Wendy's Wine Fairy & Cupcakes

May Your Glass be Always Full of Fun Wendy!

Wendy is off celebrating her birthday on a sunny, golden beach today so we celebrated her birthday with her Wine Fairy before she left this week. As Wendy is my blogging guru, the co-founder of this blog, a great friend & a passionate lover of my cupcakes (and was hinting for most of 2013 that she hadn’t had a birthday fairy yet), I thought that I would surprise her with her own special fairy.  My inspiration came from Wendy’s love of wine and her love of red and black and I thought what better way than to have her sitting in her own wine glass! Wendy’s wine fairy even has the same black pants with the ruffled bottoms that we love seeing her wear and I think I have captured her mischievous face and funky hair style too. Her matching cupcakes completed the red and black colour scheme for the celebration. Have fun today Wendy knowing that you finally have your own fairy and that she is sitting looking pretty in her own glass.

In my previous post I showed off my beautiful Sunflower Fairy in the making for Shaunagh’s 50th birthday in August this year. Here she is again this time neatly perched on a chocolate sunflower cake ready to celebrate Shaunagh’s special day with her.  The cake I made using a sunflower shaped cake pan and then iced the petals in bright buttercream icing and piled Chuckles from Woolworths in the centre. My fairy was inspired by Shaunagh herself who has a beautiful face that always shines with  a hint of mischievousness. The purple blossom in her hair was the finishing touch to show Shaunagh’s love for purple flowers too. As we share the same birthday, we celebrated together at The Memory Shed and were both spoilt with delicious treats and wonderful gifts from our amazing friends. I was delighted to be able to make your birthday a special one Shaunagh and I hope that she reminds you of a brilliant celebration this year.

From her humble beginning as a little yellow body with legs, my Sunflower Fairy blossoms into a delightful cake topper for Shaunagh’s 50th birthday cake!

Hydrangea Cupcakes for Shaunagh’s 50th

Hydrangea Cupcakes

My flower sugar art inspired by the different Grace Stevens workshops I have attended, is slowly starting to improve and I am enjoying using the different techniques including the dusting of edible colour onto the flowers. These pretty lilac and pink shaded hydrangea cupcakes were ordered by Tracy for the celebration of Shaunagh’s 50th birthday with her book club friends. In keeping with the lilac colour scheme I made vanilla cupcakes with the addition of generous bits of Lindt Blueberry Chocolate in the vanilla mixture.  The icing is also a pale lavender and I used tiny silver beads sprinkled among the flowers to add to the dainty effect of the hydrangea blossoms.
