Wendy is off celebrating her birthday on a sunny, golden beach today so we celebrated her birthday with her Wine Fairy before she left this week. As Wendy is my blogging guru, the co-founder of this blog, a great friend & a passionate lover of my cupcakes (and was hinting for most of 2013 that she hadn’t had a birthday fairy yet), I thought that I would surprise her with her own special fairy. My inspiration came from Wendy’s love of wine and her love of red and black and I thought what better way than to have her sitting in her own wine glass! Wendy’s wine fairy even has the same black pants with the ruffled bottoms that we love seeing her wear and I think I have captured her mischievous face and funky hair style too. Her matching cupcakes completed the red and black colour scheme for the celebration. Have fun today Wendy knowing that you finally have your own fairy and that she is sitting looking pretty in her own glass.

Sunflower Fairy Cake
In my previous post I showed off my beautiful Sunflower Fairy in the making for Shaunagh’s 50th birthday in August this year. Here she is again this time neatly perched on a chocolate sunflower cake ready to celebrate Shaunagh’s special day with her. The cake I made using a sunflower shaped cake pan and then iced the petals in bright buttercream icing and piled Chuckles from Woolworths in the centre. My fairy was inspired by Shaunagh herself who has a beautiful face that always shines with a hint of mischievousness. The purple blossom in her hair was the finishing touch to show Shaunagh’s love for purple flowers too. As we share the same birthday, we celebrated together at The Memory Shed and were both spoilt with delicious treats and wonderful gifts from our amazing friends. I was delighted to be able to make your birthday a special one Shaunagh and I hope that she reminds you of a brilliant celebration this year.

Hydrangea Cupcakes for Shaunagh’s 50th
My flower sugar art inspired by the different Grace Stevens workshops I have attended, is slowly starting to improve and I am enjoying using the different techniques including the dusting of edible colour onto the flowers. These pretty lilac and pink shaded hydrangea cupcakes were ordered by Tracy for the celebration of Shaunagh’s 50th birthday with her book club friends. In keeping with the lilac colour scheme I made vanilla cupcakes with the addition of generous bits of Lindt Blueberry Chocolate in the vanilla mixture. The icing is also a pale lavender and I used tiny silver beads sprinkled among the flowers to add to the dainty effect of the hydrangea blossoms.
Whimsical Wedding Cupcakes
I was so excited to once again be able to do one of Grace Stevens‘ Johannesburg workshops in July. Grace presented a number of workshops with the theme, Whimsical Wedding. As I have never done fondant covered cupcakes, I was really keen to do the Whimsical Wedding Cupcakes. You can see Grace’s deft hands in motion in the photos above as she showed us how to not only cover a cupcake in fondant but how to emboss the fondant and then decorate the cupcakes with pretty roses, flowers and pearls. Below I have shown my roses in the making in shades of pastel rose and yellow and my embossed sugar paste ready for my cupcakes.
Grace’s attention to detail in her workshops in how she creates her decorations and how she teaches made this a fantastic workshop and I am now loving working with this new technique of decorating cupcakes. I chose a number of different embossing plates to complete my cupcakes and I was delighted with the light fresh colour combinations for the roses and pearls. Thank you again Grace for sharing your knowledge with us in such a fun environment, I can’t wait until your next trip to Johannesburg!
Teddy Bear Christening Cake
A Teddy Bear Cake especially ordered by Lisa (TQO)’s for the christening of her god-child, Calla Grace. I was excited to craft another teddy, this time a pale pink one with brown nose and white trim. I am amazed that every time I make a teddy I am transported back to Grace Stevens class where I first learned to work with sugar paste in this way and I love that I am able to remember each step she taught us in this particular class. Lisa requested a pillow cake covered in white sugar paste with a pretty embossed bib on it and then also wanted Calla Grace’s name included in the design. Thanks Lisa for this gorgeous order and great design which made it really easy for me to envision and put together. I loved meeting all your family and your beautiful god-child Calla Grace.
