Life is a Masquerade!

Life is a Masquerade

Thanks again Julie for giving me a new challenge.  This time it was to make cupcakes for a Masked Ball Birthday Party.  I couldn’t source any ready-made decorations as was the case with the Mad-Hatter party so I tried my hand at making my own.  I was delighted with the result.

The staff at Baking Bits on Republic Road were also an inspiration, extremely helpful and ready to listen to my questions.  Thanks for having the perfect leaf cutter in stock – it was perfect for making the masks.  Thanks Ed for your idea to finish the mask off with the little black flower.

Hope you enjoy the pictures and thanks to Julie who put her trust in me to come up with something creative for her party.  Great minds must have been thinking alike as it was pure co-incidence that I used a purple and black colour scheme and so did Julie.

Disco Party Cupcakes

Now 13 Disco Cupcakes

The challenge last weekend was to make Disco Party cupcakes for Nicole who was turning 13.  Given free reign I chose music notes and pink guitars for the cupcakes and added a Now 13 cupcake topper on some of the cupcakes (thanks to my son Teigh I always have help for anything I need to do on the computer – how is it that our kids really do know more than us when it comes to electronics?).  I sourced a beautiful stand (a wedding cupcake stand) from In Good Company in Rivonia and then stacked the 40 cupcakes on it finishing it off with a Now 13 CD cover on the top.  It looked really cool on the party table and it was fun to see the kids going home with a cupcake each.

MILO CUPCAKE SUCCESS!

Success with Milo Cupcake

Iced the cupcakes shown in previous post with a butter and cream cheese icing to which I added Milo cereal ground down to powder cosistency (with my brilliant Bamix from the Tool Shop – thanks Ivana for your new business and all your great gadgets and goodies).  I also added a bar of melted Milo chocolate to the icing.

Iced the cupcakes and then sprinkled with Milo powder and finished with a block of Milo chocolate and the result….Lip smackingly delicious!

BACK TO WINTER MILO CUPCAKES

Mixing in Melted Milo Bar

I tried the milo cupcakes again and tried to think what the Cake Boss might do to improve on them.  I used finely crushed Milo Cereal (everyone must have this cereal in their home as the kids love it), added this to my vanilla mixture.  Have to admit I did not weigh how much I added.  The milo chocolate bar I melted and added into the mixture and it turned into a light golden brown colour – yummy!

The result of the baked but as yet un-iced cupcake was delicious with a hint of a crunchy texture in the cupcake.  Milo flavour is not easy to replicate but will let you know the result once they are iced  – if they last that long.

Just yummy!

EVERY GRAM COUNTS

Every gram counts!

Practical inspiration for my cupcakes came in the form of the new Joseph Joseph scale Eddie gave me for Christmas.  An awesome present that meant that finally I could get my ingredients weighed to the exact gram.  This really helps for the basic ingredients for the cupcakes.  When I am experimenting with flavours then I use my instinct.  Thanks to Eddie and Teigh and Ceire my brilliant family I always have willing tasters and critics in the house so thanks guys!

WINTER MILO CUPCAKES

Winter Milo Cupcakes

Thanks to Wendy I now have an awesome new cupcake blog and in keeping with my idea of making this a cupcake blog with the inspiration behind them here goes.  We tried out my new idea for Winter Milo Cupcakes on Friday.  I had simply added milo powder to my vanilla recipe and to the vanilla icing. The results were a delicious cupcake that looked light chocolatey but didn’t smack of milo.  I will have to try these again and will add the milo chocolate bar this time for taste.  Only challenge will be to see if the milo bar lasts long enough to get into the bowl before it is eaten.  Maybe I will have to buy 2 …. or more…..
