Pets Cake for Kirsten

Pets Birthday Cake

Natanya and her family have 2 gorgeous labradors and 5 beautiful cats that they not only adore, but that all had to fit onto one cake for her daughter, Kirsten’s 17th Birthday Cake. Thank you Natanya for sending through loads of photos of these furry friends. Luckily for me non of them are camera shy and I was able to try and represent each of them in sugar for Kirsten.

I am guessing that at times they cause chaos and mayhem in their household, but I have shown them here sitting peacefully together, all looking like butter wouldn’t melt in their mouths! It was great to make you all, Spock, Mac, Leo, Luna, Pixie, Bella and Astro! Happy 17th Birthday Kirsten and I am so pleased you loved your cakes and all your little sugar animal figurines!

Bella and Astro below looking as good as gold, but bet they are as mischievous as all labradors can be!

Rugby Figurine Birthday Cake

Rugby Player Figurine Cake

A bit of a belated post of this Rugby Figurine Cake I created for Reece’s 18th Birthday shortly before flying off to Ireland. Reece had just suffered a 2nd major rugby injury to his knee and underwent a 2nd operation meaning that he wasn’t able to play serious competitive rugby again. I thought long and hard whether this figurine was then the right figurine of Reece for his cake as I didn’t want to make him sad on his birthday. Inspired by this photograph taken by his dad and inspired by the passion he portrayed in his weekend festival of rugby I went ahead with it and hoped it would be accepted with the admiration it came with.

Rugby Player Figurine Cake

You could never capture in sugar the passion and determination this young man showed for his sport and his team mates. He worked for over 9 months with fierce drive to recover from a previous injury in order to play in such a prestigious school event. I witnessed him running on to the field with a pride I hadn’t witnessed in someone so young and then saw him play some awesome games that showed his passion for his sport. The pain and devastation that everyone around him felt for him with his 2nd injury that weekend, taking him out of the remaining games, left us truly winded. However Reece arrived back onto the field, cheering and encouraging (… and whatever else guys do….) his team from the side! I think you honestly believed your crutches were for waving and encouraging the dudes and not for holding you up!!! In those moments Reece, you showed true sportsmanship and passion for your sport, and you were and still are an inspiration to all around you. You certainly taught me that, even when the going gets tough, it is the spirit and loyalty  you show in adversity that creates the person you are! Thank you for sharing this passion and love, as well as all your other amazing characteristics with us, making us laugh and smile along the way. If you take all this strength ahead with you in every adventure your life leads you into, you won’t need rugby boots to fly, just yourself!

PS….you have way better hair than I managed to capture in strands of sugar!

Captain Morgan Cake

Captain Morgan Cake

This Captain Morgan Cake was one of those orders that was pure fun from start to finish and I was really sad to wave goodbye to this figurine as he departed for the wild waters of the Hartebeespoort Dam to be part of a birthday celebration. Thank you Tache for trusting me with this order for your friend and how awesome to include his love for Captain Morgan Rum in your order. You asked me for a pirate on a barrel and this pirate was really proud to stand on his barrel cake. Eat your heart out Johnny Depp as Captain Morgan stole my heart that weekend and looks like he may have stolen a few others! For the full effect I made a cola flavoured buttercream for this chocolate cake. Your words of thanks were awesome Tache:

Thank you so much Lisa! Everyone was mesmerized by your incredible work… so much so that the birthday boy refused to cut his cake and took it home with him 😂 no jokes! Thank you for creating this at such short notice and for pouring so much love into what you do 💕

Celebrating a 21st in Greek Sugar Style

Greek 21st Cake

After returning from a wonderful family visit to England and Ireland, it is time to get back to my other sweet life of baking and blogging.  It is appropriate then to start with a travel themed cake that I created before my sojourn in the northern hemisphere.

Debbie gave me so much inspiration with all the careful thought she had put into this special cake for her daughter’s 21st Birthday Cake.  Not only did I have a number of photos of Steph with her family and boyfriend but I had the exciting theme of her upcoming trip to Greece and the islands they were planning to visit to translate into a sugar story.

The beginning of this story started with a sugar figurine of Steph with her sweet smile and gentle face. Steph’s other passion in her life, her yoga, I captured by popping her silky dark hair into a pony tail and dressing her in stylish yoga shorts and top.  Once she was on the cake, I added a casual sling travel bag over her shoulder.

While researching images for the Greek Islands, I came across the themed touristy slip slops available and thought they would be the perfect way to incorporate Athens, Santorini, Mykonos & Los.  The slip slops were easy to cut out of blue sugar paste to which I added cut out edible images reflecting the 4 islands. Black embossed sugar paste straps completed each slip slop before I added them to the cobble-stoned cake board. Painted blue sugar fences, flower pots and bright bouganvillia and golden sugar sand completed the bottom tier of this cake as I tried to capture the warmth and charm of these beautiful islands.

Steph’s ticket into adulthood I added as an embossed travel tag along with a Greek flag to the top of her cake.

As her family,  and the time they treasure sharing wonderful adventures and activities, is so important to Steph, I added her family looking on at her from a blue wooden-shuttered window. The window opposite gave a glimpse into the love she shares with Blake who would be sharing her Greek adventure with her.

It was a pleasure to create this story for Steph’s celebration and even more of a pleasure to experience her excitement on seeing her cake so carefully thought out by her mom. I felt so chuffed when she exclaimed “….and that is me on the cake”!

As the door opens onto the next chapter of your life Steph, may it be one that is filled with great adventures, tremendous fun and remarkable memories!

Whisky Barrel Cake

Whisky Barrel Cake

Last weekend’s order meant taking leave from the part of my brain that is happy thinking about pretty colours, fairy figurines and girly goodies and entering the realm of creating a birthday celebration cake for a guy! Amy asked me to make a whisky barrel for her husband, Rick, who was celebrating his 30th birthday.  The cake was a 2 layered vanilla and chocolate cake, carved into the shape of a barrel. I then covered the cake in strips of wood embossed sugar paste, painted the strips to resemble aged wood and added the black metal strips and wording to the barrel.

The plaque was designed by Rick’s brother in law, also Rick, and it was the perfect addition to create an elegant and realistic look to this cake. As always I love my cakes to be placed on a board that suits the theme and the grey embossed board here was perfect for the cake and the addition of the birthday message. Wishing you a brilliant 30th Birthday Rick and may there be many an occasion to charge your whisky glass!

Rick…. ” Thank you Lisa, such a sensational creation “

Amy….” Lisa, thank you so much!  The cake was an absolute hit and it was so beautiful that we almost didn’t want to cut it up!  You are so talented.”

Tracy…. “Once again, you outdid yourself Lisa!  Thank you for the fabulous cake – it was much admired “

Birthe’s Book Cake

Travelling, Sewing & Gardening Book Cake

“A good book is the precious lifeblood of a master spirit.” –  John Milton

Birthe, at 80, is the master spirit of a rich, beautiful and adventurous life and her book cake for her 80th Birthday had to portray this. It was wonderful that Susan spent the time with me to make sure that I knew all about her mom before I designed the cake. Alicia, her granddaughter, speaks of her grandmother with such love and gentleness that it wasn’t difficult to take both their ideas and include them in the cake. The creative result of a few hours of sweet brainstorming was a cake that would be 3 books showing Birthe’s passion in life.

Travelling, Sewing & Gardening Book Cake

Birthe is a Danish name and Denmark and the theme of travel was a perfect book to start with as Birthe was born and spent many years in Demark before embarking on many other exciting travel journeys. This book titled A Beautiful Journey, was a delicious red velvet cake, ganached and covered in an elegant cream sugar paste binding. I included the traditional colourful Danish houses, bicycle, the Copenhagen round tower, Danish flag and postcards. Of course no journey would be complete without a carrier bag and luggage tag which made Birthe’s travel book sassy and unique to her.

While not travelling, Birthe’s other passions in life are gardening and sewing and knitting. Beautiful handpainted serviettes were the inspiration for the blue and yellow daisies on The Garden Grower book. The blue embossed book cover portrays the life of a gardener with the sugar fence, wheelbarrrow, bird house, watering can, gloves and of course loads of blossoms. What a beautiful gift Birthe has in being so passionate about nature and her garden and I am sure she has left all the birds singing with delight in her beautiful gardens. Cutting this cake revealed layers of tasty passion fruit and creamy buttercream to complement the theme.

Creative Style applies to all Birthe’s accomplishments and was a perfect title for the 3rd book. When you are 80, you remember a dress pattern costing only 35c! This edible print of a Simplicity pattern from 1965 was a delight in design and colour for this book cover. All the tools a dressmaker requires I added in sugar of course and the fabric and lace are edible additions from Crystal Candy. It was so exciting to have my cake part of such a memorable celebration, with so much detail in the planning and in a beautifully decorated restaurant. Even more special was Birthe and her family and friends’ reaction to many hours spent portraying her character in sugar. Wishing you a wonderful year ahead Birthe and many more spent with such a loving family!
