Flower 21st Cake

Flower 21st Cake

Sadie celebrated her 21st Birthday earlier this year ….. yes much earlier …. I have been away too long from my blogging!  This layered cake was a huge trend in the cake world this year and it is always difficult to make a trendy cake original.  When Di ordered this particular design for her daughter, I was so delighted to take part in this 2018 trend.

Flower 21st Cake

Di’s brief was a citrus flavoured cake and pink decorations, so I opted for 1 delicious orange sponge cake & the other a naughty naartjie flavour with puffs of zesty lemon buttercream between the 2 sponge layers and on top. If you look closely you will see I piped the meringue kisses in different styled swirls and combinations of soft and vibrant pinks & sprinkled them with tiny white beads. What you can’t see is that these tiny sweet kisses were a delicious passion fruit flavour. Flavour Nation made 2018 just the most delicious year ever as they introduced us to over 70 gorgeous water-based flavours.  I will admit here that my collection is growing weekly and many of the fruit flavours have been used to enhance 1 or 2 G&T’s this year!!!!

Roses tinged with bright pink and perfectly pert strawberries were all I needed to complete this delicious ensemble and I an embossed white fondant board just added the extra elegance.

Thank you Di and Sadie for another Cupcakes2Delite order and for allowing me to play with one of the sweet trends of 2018.

Celebrating a 21st in Greek Sugar Style

Greek 21st Cake

After returning from a wonderful family visit to England and Ireland, it is time to get back to my other sweet life of baking and blogging.  It is appropriate then to start with a travel themed cake that I created before my sojourn in the northern hemisphere.

Debbie gave me so much inspiration with all the careful thought she had put into this special cake for her daughter’s 21st Birthday Cake.  Not only did I have a number of photos of Steph with her family and boyfriend but I had the exciting theme of her upcoming trip to Greece and the islands they were planning to visit to translate into a sugar story.

The beginning of this story started with a sugar figurine of Steph with her sweet smile and gentle face. Steph’s other passion in her life, her yoga, I captured by popping her silky dark hair into a pony tail and dressing her in stylish yoga shorts and top.  Once she was on the cake, I added a casual sling travel bag over her shoulder.

While researching images for the Greek Islands, I came across the themed touristy slip slops available and thought they would be the perfect way to incorporate Athens, Santorini, Mykonos & Los.  The slip slops were easy to cut out of blue sugar paste to which I added cut out edible images reflecting the 4 islands. Black embossed sugar paste straps completed each slip slop before I added them to the cobble-stoned cake board. Painted blue sugar fences, flower pots and bright bouganvillia and golden sugar sand completed the bottom tier of this cake as I tried to capture the warmth and charm of these beautiful islands.

Steph’s ticket into adulthood I added as an embossed travel tag along with a Greek flag to the top of her cake.

As her family,  and the time they treasure sharing wonderful adventures and activities, is so important to Steph, I added her family looking on at her from a blue wooden-shuttered window. The window opposite gave a glimpse into the love she shares with Blake who would be sharing her Greek adventure with her.

It was a pleasure to create this story for Steph’s celebration and even more of a pleasure to experience her excitement on seeing her cake so carefully thought out by her mom. I felt so chuffed when she exclaimed “….and that is me on the cake”!

As the door opens onto the next chapter of your life Steph, may it be one that is filled with great adventures, tremendous fun and remarkable memories!

Purple Fairy Cake

Last Saturday Bianca celebrated her 21st Birthday with her family and friends and Sophie trusted me with her special cake for the evening. This cake had to be extra special for a number of reasons. Sophie wanted Bianca to have everything she had been looking for in a cake; her favourite colour purple, a bit of bling and something feminine and beautiful. This particular 2 tiered cake is based on an exquisite cake from Kek Couture and as Sophie loved the picture I adapted it to fit with Bianca’s celebration. The sugar modelling work of Kek Couture is inspirational in itself and I had to be able to do justice to this beautiful idea. The Purple Fairy had to be beautiful as Sophie sent me pictures of Bianca for me to use as a model for this pretty fairy and I was so delighted to hear that Bianca loved her fairy. When I delivered the cake, this little fairy with her painted rice paper wings looked so content sitting on her bejeweled and flowered cake in an exquisitely decorated room for the evening.

Finally Bianca’s cake had to be just that extra special as Sophie was my son’s primary school teacher 18 year’s ago and Teigh not only adored her but thrived in her class. Sophie was then and is still an inspiration to the young children she teaches. Bianca clearly has a special place in Sophie’s heart and in creating this cake I knew it would bring a smile to Bianca’s face and also say a huge thank you to another beautiful, caring and loving woman in my life.

Backpack 21st Cake

Backpack 21st Birthday Cake

Ross celebrated his 21st Birthday earlier this year and Tanya asked me to make a cake for him that would depict all his interests and passions. For as long as I have known Ross, he has always had a deep love for and interest in animals and he has a passion for the wild and for his photography of wild animals. The Backpack Cake was the easiest way to encorporate all these interests, the backpack of course represents every young man’s dream to travel. This backpack is inspired by one of Grace Stevens cakes in her book, Celebration Cakes.

Tucked neatly into the front pocket are a sugar paste zebra and lion, really keen to be studied and photographed. The zebra nonchalantly peers out from a side pocket. Ross has a Nikon camera and I am sure that he will take many wonderful pictures as he sets out on his adventures. Wishing you all the best Ross as you embark on the next chapter of your life!

Brandon’s 21st Backpack Cake!

What a privilege it was to celebrate Brandon’s 21st Birthday with him, his family and his friends.  As a mother we always hope that our own children will choose friends who will touch and influence their lives in a positive way.  Brandon has been that friend to my son Teigh since their early days in primary school and it is amazing to have watched their friendship develop into what it is today. It would be difficult to not want to be Brandon’s friend as he has a funny, quirky, friendly and deeply genuine personality as well as a rather naughty glint in his eyes. The glint I am sure comes from both his passion for the night sky as well as his passion for travel and keen sense of adventure. Michelle, his mom, had the idea of a backpack for his birthday cake and that is how this bright blue and black cake developed into his 21st Birthday Cake.

Ready for Adventure!

I covered the board for the cake in white fondant, stencilled the board with blue smudges and then added an edible print of 3 brochures Brandon had perused for his travel adventures. The Backpack Cake consists of 2 tiered cakes, the first a chocolate fudge cake and the second a coffee cake which I stacked and then carved into the backpack. I covered the cake in blue sugar paste and then added black straps and pocket details as well as stitching and zip details. The final addition was the edible ticket and passport. Brandon thank you for your friendship and may this be just the beginning of all the adventures you are sure to have as a young adult!

Motorbike Helmet Cake for David’s 21st!

Motorbike Helmet Cake

David was the first friend of Teigh to turn 21 and it was wonderful  for our family to celebrate his birthday with him and his family and to make his special birthday cake for him.  Julieta, his mom, sent me brilliant pictures of his off-road Fox helmet and she asked me to do a cake that showed David’s passion for off-road biking.  I made a cake, carved it into the shape of the helmet and with Teigh’s guidance it resembled the Fox helmet.  Thanks to Pat’s expertise fondant skills, the cake was beautifully and flawlessly covered before I added the printed rice paper goggles and logos, red sugar paste strap and sugar paste dots. Finally I added chocolate rocks to the base of the board and washi taped the edge for a complete finished look.  David was surprised by his mom’s order of this cake and everyone loved it but I have to say the hi-light of the day for me was when Julieta came to cut the cake and tried to lift the goggles off the cake thinking that they were real goggles, a real compliment to the cake!
