Music Box with Crystal Candy Bas Relief Mould

Music Box Sugar Art with Crystal Candy Bas Relief Mould

Another new and exciting product from Crystal Candy was the inspiration for this vintage Music Box and ballerina figurine from my previous post. This time the new Bas Relief Mould with its vintage feel, was the perfect finish for my sugar paste music box.

I dusted the Bas Relief Mould with Crystal Candy’s Pearlescent Lustre in Antique Champagne and then pressed my sugar paste mixed with chocolate modelling paste (coloured a deeply dark grey) to fit snugly into the mould. I popped the mould into the fridge for approx 15 min (time always varies with me – depending on how distracted I get while waiting!) This, below,  was the result after gently peeling the paste out of the mould.

I cut this into 3 equal sections to wrap around the music box that I had formed using chocolate modelling paste and then made another vintage piece for the lid. The chocolate modelling paste mixed with the sugar paste allowed me time to press the lid to fit in line with the bottom of the box. To cover the joins I used a strip of pearls mould & the same paste to create a line of tiny pearls stuck over each join. The fun part was dusting the entire box again with a light dusting of the Pearlescent Lustre, Antique Champagne and watching each relief come to life!

With an added embossed key the music box was perfect for my ballerina figurine who balanced gracefully in her pink and lace tutu. Thank you Ray for trusting me to try out this wondeful new Bas Relief Mould.

Ballerina Music Box

Ballerina Music Box Sugar Art

The theme of Music automatically brought to mind a beautiful music box I was given as a child. On winding the key, the ballerina figurine turned slowly and came to a stop as the music stopped. This box is a reminder of how we need to continue to turn our own keys in order to keep the dance that is our lives in motion.

I placed her on a sugar creation of a vintage music box to remind me of the beauty of all the valued memories of my childhood. It was a perfect musical ending to receive a Silver, 2nd Place Award in the Intermediate Sugar Art Section for her at the Hostex 2018 – SACDG Competition 2 weeks ago.

As the Hostex 2018 opened its doors at Gallagher Estate this year, we were treated to an array of delectable treats, new products and everything else related to food and drink catering. The South African Cake Decorators Guild hosted their competition with all entries both cake and sugar art falling into the theme of music. Every entry portrayed a unique meaning within the theme for each decorator and it was interesting to see so many varied interpretations of the theme. Thank you to Hostex and SACDG, the judges and all the sponsors for giving us a platform to show our passion for decorating.

My figurine’s petite body, I modelled using Saracino Modelling Paste, once again just love the paste for modelling figurines. I dressed her in a delicate pink tutu adorned with patterns of Crystal Candy Lace. I was so excited to be the first to use this new Bas Relief Mould from Crystal Candy and the detail of the leaves, lace and hearts created the perfect finish to my vintage music box. Thank you Ray for letting me use this mould and can’t wait for the release of these totally awesome new Bas Relief Moulds!

Bo’s 21st Cake

21st Birthday Hat Box Cake

What a pleasure it was to create this cake for Bo for her 21st.  The photos Stephanie, her mom, sent to me showed a beautiful, poised and elegant young woman and it was fun to translate these characteristics into a sugar paste figurine for her 21st Cake.  I had to create long eyelashes, silky brunette hair and a gorgeous curvaceous figure dressed in a sexy deep coral dress.  Bo’s sister, Amy, also wanted me to add on pretty jewelry.  It is all this love and understanding that my clients show for the person who is celebrating that make me want to create the perfect cake for them.

21st Birthday Hat Box Cake

Stephanie and Amy’s idea was to have a Hat Box Cake with their beautiful Bo sitting on the box. As Bo was completing her course in BConsumer Science in Clothing and Retail Management, I thought it would be great to add details reflecting her passions. The cake board I covered in embossed sugar paste with movement on the board to reflect fabric. I added my favourite Crystal Candy Lace I made using Crystal Candy Midnight Garden Lace mat, which I dusted a soft gold.  Gold and silver antique scissors, gold buttons and rolled ‘fabric’ coral roses, a coral rose and a name tag completed Bo’s Coral and Gold Hat Box Cake.

21st Birthday Hat Box Cake

Not only was this cake delectable looking but inside revealed a chocolate cake, layered with raspberry buttercream and coated in chocolate ganache. On collecting the cake, Stephanie and Amy loved the cake and I was delighted that they had trusted me with their order.

Stephanie … ” Thank you Lisa for this beautiful cake, we loved it. “

Bridal Figurine Competition Entry

Bride Figurine Competition Entry

This Bridal Figurine Cake deserved first and foremost a mention of the occasion that it was created for and the wonderful women I had the privilege to meet on that occasion. My previous post has the full story of this wonderful day. As she turned out to be a really pretty figurine I have added here extra photos I took of her just prior to the competition.

I created her using Sweet Revolutions by Domy Woman Mould for her face and torso. These moulds have been amazing in that they allow me to make a figurine in a much shorter time frame. The beautiful Saracino paste, as always was amazing to work with and gave my bridal figurine a soft, gentle look as she stood elegantly in her lace dress.

I chose one of my favourite lace designs from Crystal Candy, Will-o-the-Wisp Mould for the lace covering of the dress. Underneath the lace I added a paper thin white Zeelandia paste dress from the waist down. The lace layer I wanted to be a separate layer so I attached it in a few places leaving the remaining lace to fall naturally over the bridal figurine and spill around her onto her cake. I cut out tiny pieces of the lace design to add as shoulder and bodice details and completed her with a simple swish of brunette sugar paste hair.

I had no idea that creating this simple cake and figurine would lead to such an extraordinary day (so many of my sugar experiences are adventures …. but this one took the cake…!) Thank you to Santi Britz of iDUC and to Vanessa Broughton of Hostess Pro for your wonderful gifts you have given and continue giving in your own ways to women everywhere.

This tiny sugar paste duck I moulded using Zeelandia sugar paste and it represented the logo and the colours of the iDUC organisation. The iDUC sat proudly on my cake and now holds a special place in my heart as we learned the story of this humble symbol of comfort from Santi Britz herself.

Lace & Rose Cupcakes

Happy Birthday Tracy and so pleased you enjoyed these cupcakes with your family.  I know how you love fondant iced cupcakes, so I made half your cupcakes with fondant domes decorated with the always beautiful Crystal Candy Lace. The Valentina Lace Mould  was a perfectly elegant choice for these cupcakes. I completed the gift box with six buttercream swirled cupcakes with rolled roses and tiny pearls.

Birthe’s Book Cake

Travelling, Sewing & Gardening Book Cake

“A good book is the precious lifeblood of a master spirit.” –  John Milton

Birthe, at 80, is the master spirit of a rich, beautiful and adventurous life and her book cake for her 80th Birthday had to portray this. It was wonderful that Susan spent the time with me to make sure that I knew all about her mom before I designed the cake. Alicia, her granddaughter, speaks of her grandmother with such love and gentleness that it wasn’t difficult to take both their ideas and include them in the cake. The creative result of a few hours of sweet brainstorming was a cake that would be 3 books showing Birthe’s passion in life.

Travelling, Sewing & Gardening Book Cake

Birthe is a Danish name and Denmark and the theme of travel was a perfect book to start with as Birthe was born and spent many years in Demark before embarking on many other exciting travel journeys. This book titled A Beautiful Journey, was a delicious red velvet cake, ganached and covered in an elegant cream sugar paste binding. I included the traditional colourful Danish houses, bicycle, the Copenhagen round tower, Danish flag and postcards. Of course no journey would be complete without a carrier bag and luggage tag which made Birthe’s travel book sassy and unique to her.

While not travelling, Birthe’s other passions in life are gardening and sewing and knitting. Beautiful handpainted serviettes were the inspiration for the blue and yellow daisies on The Garden Grower book. The blue embossed book cover portrays the life of a gardener with the sugar fence, wheelbarrrow, bird house, watering can, gloves and of course loads of blossoms. What a beautiful gift Birthe has in being so passionate about nature and her garden and I am sure she has left all the birds singing with delight in her beautiful gardens. Cutting this cake revealed layers of tasty passion fruit and creamy buttercream to complement the theme.

Creative Style applies to all Birthe’s accomplishments and was a perfect title for the 3rd book. When you are 80, you remember a dress pattern costing only 35c! This edible print of a Simplicity pattern from 1965 was a delight in design and colour for this book cover. All the tools a dressmaker requires I added in sugar of course and the fabric and lace are edible additions from Crystal Candy. It was so exciting to have my cake part of such a memorable celebration, with so much detail in the planning and in a beautifully decorated restaurant. Even more special was Birthe and her family and friends’ reaction to many hours spent portraying her character in sugar. Wishing you a wonderful year ahead Birthe and many more spent with such a loving family!
