Bikini Girl Figurine for Erin

Bikini Girl Figurine

Erin chose this cute sugar paste figurine in a bikini to add to the Beach themed cake her granny was making for her 13th birthday.  Using my trusted Saracino modelling paste, I modelled a sugar version of Erin with gorgeous strawberry blonde sugar hair, gorgeous smile and pretty eyes framed with a sprinkling of sun kissed freckles. No beach girl is complete without a colourful towel to sit elegantly on so out came my embossing tools to create the lime green towel for the dainty figurine.

It was brilliant to hear you had such a fun party Erin and thanks Darryn for the photos of the completed cake with the bikini girl figurine.

Ballerina Music Box

Ballerina Music Box Sugar Art

The theme of Music automatically brought to mind a beautiful music box I was given as a child. On winding the key, the ballerina figurine turned slowly and came to a stop as the music stopped. This box is a reminder of how we need to continue to turn our own keys in order to keep the dance that is our lives in motion.

I placed her on a sugar creation of a vintage music box to remind me of the beauty of all the valued memories of my childhood. It was a perfect musical ending to receive a Silver, 2nd Place Award in the Intermediate Sugar Art Section for her at the Hostex 2018 – SACDG Competition 2 weeks ago.

As the Hostex 2018 opened its doors at Gallagher Estate this year, we were treated to an array of delectable treats, new products and everything else related to food and drink catering. The South African Cake Decorators Guild hosted their competition with all entries both cake and sugar art falling into the theme of music. Every entry portrayed a unique meaning within the theme for each decorator and it was interesting to see so many varied interpretations of the theme. Thank you to Hostex and SACDG, the judges and all the sponsors for giving us a platform to show our passion for decorating.

My figurine’s petite body, I modelled using Saracino Modelling Paste, once again just love the paste for modelling figurines. I dressed her in a delicate pink tutu adorned with patterns of Crystal Candy Lace. I was so excited to be the first to use this new Bas Relief Mould from Crystal Candy and the detail of the leaves, lace and hearts created the perfect finish to my vintage music box. Thank you Ray for letting me use this mould and can’t wait for the release of these totally awesome new Bas Relief Moulds!

Johnny (Jorge) Walker & Ozzie

Johnny Walker Cake Topper

2017 ended with another challenging but really fun figurine project. Ivana asked me to translate Jorge’s appreciation for Johnny Walker and his love for their cute Scottish Terrier, Oscar, into sugar for his birthday in December. She new exactly what she wanted to surprise Jorge with on his special day and this became my inspiration for this figurine. Using my precious stash of Saracino Modelling Paste, I created a Johnny Walker figurine with his recognizable stride and red jacket but made him more a “Jorge” Walker to suite Jorge’s character. Once again just loved using Domy’s Sweet Revolution Man face mould. Ozzie looking adoringly up at him, was modelled using black Saracino Modelling Paste.

Johnny Walker Cake TopperThe signature gold top hat, I modelled with ivory coloured paste before painting it using Rolkem’s Special Gold mixed with alcohol. Ruffled white paste strips completed his over-sized collar, cravat & cuffs and he proudly sports a black bow-tie & painted goatee.

With gorgeous glutes and sugar paste legs like these, no wonder Johnny ‘Jorge’ Walker looks so dashing and confident. After the birthday celebration, I had him back again in my kitchen, this time to make a keepsake display platform (wood-embossed) for him and Ozzie to stand on. Thank you Jorge and Ivana for loving him that much that he is now standing proudly on his own shelf in your shop, that is the best thank you ever!

The delicious cake, lovingly made by Ivana, to accompany Johnny & Ozzie to Jorge’s celebration and a fantastic collection of Johnny Walker make the perfect backdrop for this figurine.

Wendy Figurine on Books

Wendy Figurine on Books

As 2018 starts, I find I have a few cakes and sugar pieces that I still have not blogged, however the new year is always a time of reflection of the year that has just swiftly wizzed by, mixed with the anticipation of the beginning of a new chapter. My life, and not just my sugar life, is recorded in special anecdotes on my Cupcakes2Delite blog which you are now reading. Initially I started this blog because I wanted to leave behind some sort of photographic legacy of what I had learnt to create. It then quickly changed into a way that I could show my appreciation for the family and friends in my life and has now shown me just how much I have evolved in these years as a sugar artist.

Wendy Figurine on BooksI paid tribute to my blogging guru, Wendy, in Jan 2014, in my post about the Wine Fairy I created for her birthday. The little Wine Fairy captured the character of Wendy with her black bob and red and black outfit. Wendy kept this little figurine all the way to 2017, when she finally true to her name became ‘legless’ (the figurine that is and not Wendy)!!!

With my anticipation for 2018, came the need to say a thank you in the form of an ‘updated’ Wendy figurine for Wendy as all my hours of baking, designing, creating, photographing and writing would not have been recorded if it wasn’t for this blog that Wendy patiently taught me how to set up. Thank you Wendy for sewing that blogging seed in my brain and making it seem like an intriguing way to record my story. Not only has it been fun to write my own posts but it has been fun to be invited to write guest posts on other blogs.

My 2018, Modern Day Wendy Figurine, had to show the Wendy we know today.  You will be pleased to see Wendy, that  you have developed a gorgeous decolletage since 2014,  and your little figurine is showing off your brand new funky, spikey hair style (thanks to Craig and his magic scissors), a sassy new figure and of course most importantly your love for books! I chose the last 3 books you excitedly posted on facebook as a pretty perch for your sugar butt. Thank you for all the gorgeous books, old and new, that you choose for us to read, it certainly makes my literary life that much more interesting!

Thanks to you, I have been able to share my blogging knowledge and encourage others to use blogging as a business tool for their sugar and other work. Thanks to you the pages of my life have a way to be shared with my family, friends, clients and teachers. Enjoy your new little Wendy and here’s to 2018 being a fantastic sequal to 2017!

Scrapbooking Friends Figurines

Scrapbooking Friends Figurines

It was such fun creating these 2 scrapbooking friends out of modelling paste for Mandy-Lou of Annah Fudge Gourmet Cupcakes a few weeks ago.  Not only is Mandy a complete delight to do work for she always has time for a laugh and a couple of stories even as she busily completes her orders. These 2 figurines were for a business anniversary celebration and once again photographs of the 2 gorgeous friends were translated into sugar for them. As you can see I had such fun photographing these colourful characters once they were done.

Japanese Girl Figurine

Japanese Girl Figurine

Danniel messaged me at the beginning of September with photographs of a sugar paste figurine she had ordered that had clearly been made in a hurry and not with a huge amount of attention to detail for her 30th Birthday Cake that weekend.  It was not in her budget to pay me for another figurine when I quoted her as she had already paid for the figurine from another baker.  Realising how important this little figurine was to her, I said if she would travel to me from Pretoria then I could help her fix it.

As I was expecting her the next afternoon I had a look at the photos to come up with a solution to fix the figurine she had ordered.  It really looked beyond just some cosmetic sugar touch ups and so I decided that I would make her a completely new figurine and I surprised Danniel as she arrived with this pretty Japanese Girl Figurine. Her message saying I had made her year was all the payment I needed for this little sugar piece.  Thank you Danniel for trusting me to rescue your birthday cake.

Embracing Nature Competition Figurines

Embracing Nature Figurines

The Good Food and Wine Show in Johannesburg has come and gone and it was more than just a wining and dining experience for me.  I have my Embracing Nature Figurines as a daily reminder of the challenge of entering a competition piece for the show and having a fun weekend.  This sugar paste couple was my entry into the Cake Competition hosted by the South African Cake Decorators Guild (SACDG). I was so chuffed that the judges noted that they liked my “two enchanting figurines in a field of daisies”. Constructive criticism was that I needed to roll my paste thinner for my flowers.

Embracing Nature Figurines

The detailed painting Nature’s Embrace by Josephine Wallwas my inspiration for this piece as I could really choose any celebratory piece to enter in the competition. Josephine captures equally the power of nature and its gentleness and grace and her artwork resounded with me as Knysna had just been devastated by ferocious fires. Immediately following the heartbreak that came with images of families and animals left either homeless, or having lost their possessions in the fires, came the beautiful images of a caring and compassionate and generous country that came together to support those who had been affected. My two sugar characters only have eyes for each other in this piece and hopefully I managed to portray the gentleness of Josephine’s embracing trees.

I hand moulded the faces using Saracino Modelling Paste and then used the Zeelandia for the bark covering, making sure to mark the paste to recreate the bark and then allow it to fold over their backs and waists to show their emerging torsos. Nature’s trail follows them in the ivy and daisies resting on the edible moss floor and gently chasing up the  roots and bark surrounding them.
