Rose Fairy Tutorial

Rose Fairy -Cupcakes2Delite
Rose Fairy -Cupcakes2Delite

This petite Rose Fairy was a figurine I made for a specially requested figurine class.

I thought I would share the tutorial with you here in this blog post.

She is a character figurine, so not anatomically perfect but totally sweet in her rose petal dress and rose leaf bodice & boots.

Rose Fairy -Cupcakes2Delite

I hope you have fun trying out this sweet character & let me know how you get on or if you have suggestions for any other tutorials

1. Colour 100g fondant (Premium or Bakels) ivory (no cmc added)

2. Roll out your ivory fondant and cover a 7 inch thick cake board, emboss with stone embossing mat

3. Select stone colour dusting powders

4. I used Rolkem Cappucino and Terracotta

5. Lightly dust first with the lighter colour (Cappuccino)

6. Dust into the grooves & edges of your board with the darker colour (Terracotta)

7. Colour 130g fondant coral or any colour to suit your fairy (add 1.5ml cmc)

8. Push the coral fondant into your rose mould (siliko rose mould).  I pushed a 3cm polystyrene ball into the paste in the mould to make the rose a bit lighter in weight.  You can also create a tree trunk or rock for your fairy to sit on.

9. I used Rolkem Watermelon dust to dust the rose

10. Stick your rose onto your cake board using edible cmc glue or royal icing and have your tools ready to create your fairy.

Colour 140g Zeelandia paste a flesh colour.  Add 3 ml cmc and work in well.

The paste is easier to use if allowed to settle a few hours or overnight.

You will have left over paste but I always mix up more flesh than I need in case I need to re-roll a limb or redo the head.

11. Legs (12g each) roll into 2 x 12g balls

12. Roll each ball into an approx. 8cm tapered sausage

13. Cut off at an angle a small amount of paste from the thin tapered end using a sharp knife

14/16 Roll this tapered end to form the foot and then gently pull up heel.  Using your figure gentle roll the back of the knee

15/17 Fold the leg into a right angle for a sitting figurine and pull out paste to form the knee.

18. Glue the 2 legs in position on your rose

19. Roll 24 g of paste into a ball, then into an elongated teardrop.  From the large rounded ended ease paste to form a kneck

20. Using shaping tools form the bust line (if this fairy is for a child this does not need to be done)

21. Twist a support skewer through the fairy torso from the kneck down and insert the skewer into the rose so that the torso fits onto the fairy’s legs.

22. Dress your fairy using rose petal leaves that have been embossed and edges softened and curled.  Add rose leaf boots

23/24/25. Create the bodice using rose leaves.  Let smaller rose leaves fall over the skirt

26.  Roll 2 x 5g flesh coloured balls into tapered sausages

27. Roll thinner end of tapered sausage to form wrist and hand

28. Cut out thumb and then divide remaining pad into 4 using a sharp knife, roll to round thumb and fingers. Roll out to thin paste at the elbow and gently fold to form the elbow

29/30. Glue arms using edible cmc glue to the fairy torso & dress the shoulders with leaves/straps. Dust the petals and leaves to highlight the edges

I have added the head in this sequence but would recommend making the head first in order for it to dry before adding the eyes and dusting detail.

31. Roll 20g flesh coloured paste into a ball and then gently roll to indent the centre of your ball.  You can also shape the chin at this stage.

32. Indent eyes, nose and cut for the mouth

33. Shape eyeshadow recess and slightly open the mouth

34. Using a balling tool make an indentation either side of the mouth line

35. Using fingers, shapers and small balling tools, shape the lips

36. Using shapers and balling tools, shape the nose and make nostrils

37. Insert small balls of white fondant for the eyeballs.  Cut out 2 irises from fondant using icing nozzles and glue to the white. Do the same but smaller in black for the pupils.  Carefully dust around the irises in black. Dust apricot into the recesses and shape of the nose and lips and eyes. Complete the eye using brown to dust eyeliner and black for a deeper eye line

38. Trim the skewer to size to attach the head and add cmc edible glue to the skewer.  Gently add the head onto the stick making sure not to squash the face.

39. Now the hair and final details can be added to your figurine.

40. Take a step back and admire your beautiful fairy and at this step you are fully entitled to do a little happy dance!

Rose Cake Macaron Tower – Helen’s 50th

Rose Cake Macaron Tower

A walk through Helen’s garden is a gift of tranquility, beauty, love and floral passion. Helen’s gentle touch and knowledge can be seen in every living space of her garden and home. It was with this in mind that I designed her 50th Birthday Rose Cake Macaron Tower. The brief was roses and pale pastel colours with macarons inspired by a family visit to the Laduree shop in Paris.

Rose CakeRose Cake

I made these roses from flower paste, carefully dusted in pastel shades of yellow, pink and peach. The pastel macarons completed the tower cake: soft yellow (lemon flavoured), perfect rose (rose water flavoured), pastel green (made with a combination of pistachio and almond flour), pretty orange (orange blossom) and pale brown (chocolate flavoured with cocoa).

Beautifully displayed in Helen’s home, this cake showcased her personality and it was a pleasure to create this cake and then to share in such a beautifully planned 50th celebration.

Thank you for your kind words Helen:

” Thank you so much for the most incredible cake and macarons. You are a genius. It was perfect… the subtle delicate flavours, the subtle colours, everything.”

Unicorn & Triceratops Birthday Cake

Unicorn & Triceratops Birthday Cake

Christopher and Erin celebrated another imaginatively fun birthday together & it was brilliant to be able to make their cake again this year. Every little girl seems to be on a magical journey with unicorns, and Christopher’s interest in dinosaurs and in particular the triceratops were the inspiration for the cake that Sue had in mind for their 4th birthday.

Unicorn & Triceratops Birthday Cake

Erin loves everything girly, so I moulded a baby unicorn in white Zeelandia sugar paste and added soft pastel twirls of paste for her hair and tail. A pretty pink bow, rainbow and clouds with tiny flowers and butterflies and of course the golden horn and ears were perfect finishing touches for this magical figurine.

The triceratops with its innocent and impish grin was perfect for Christopher’s personality and ‘ jungle’ leaves I made with Fondant Solution’s leaf mould were a perfect backdrop for this cute figurine. What fun to enter into such a magical sugar world to create this cake for Christopher and Erin.

Bridal Figurine Competition Entry

Bride Figurine Competition Entry

This Bridal Figurine Cake deserved first and foremost a mention of the occasion that it was created for and the wonderful women I had the privilege to meet on that occasion. My previous post has the full story of this wonderful day. As she turned out to be a really pretty figurine I have added here extra photos I took of her just prior to the competition.

I created her using Sweet Revolutions by Domy Woman Mould for her face and torso. These moulds have been amazing in that they allow me to make a figurine in a much shorter time frame. The beautiful Saracino paste, as always was amazing to work with and gave my bridal figurine a soft, gentle look as she stood elegantly in her lace dress.

I chose one of my favourite lace designs from Crystal Candy, Will-o-the-Wisp Mould for the lace covering of the dress. Underneath the lace I added a paper thin white Zeelandia paste dress from the waist down. The lace layer I wanted to be a separate layer so I attached it in a few places leaving the remaining lace to fall naturally over the bridal figurine and spill around her onto her cake. I cut out tiny pieces of the lace design to add as shoulder and bodice details and completed her with a simple swish of brunette sugar paste hair.

I had no idea that creating this simple cake and figurine would lead to such an extraordinary day (so many of my sugar experiences are adventures …. but this one took the cake…!) Thank you to Santi Britz of iDUC and to Vanessa Broughton of Hostess Pro for your wonderful gifts you have given and continue giving in your own ways to women everywhere.

This tiny sugar paste duck I moulded using Zeelandia sugar paste and it represented the logo and the colours of the iDUC organisation. The iDUC sat proudly on my cake and now holds a special place in my heart as we learned the story of this humble symbol of comfort from Santi Britz herself.

Sylvanian Families Cake

Sylvanian Families Cake

Even though my children are well grown past the age of small character toys, I am often magically transported back to my childhood with so many of my cake orders for young children and this was definitely the case with this cake for Jané. Who could nor find these little Sylvanian Family characters an absolute delight at any age? What fun it must be for children to collect these sweet character families and all the room accessories that go with them. There is a beautiful innocence in the design of these characters that is refreshing to come across these days.

As Jané’s party was a sleepover party, her mom, Janita, asked me to do a bed with these 6 Sylvanian Family characters on and around the bed. The colour palette was a pale pink and delphinium blue, so I embossed a rose pink sugar paste with daisies and covered the bed with this adding the white paste for the sheet along with the Crystal Candy Graceland Lace Mold lace trim. I lightly air brushed the pink duvet cover and blush pink throw and also the wood embossed headboard and base board of the bed. The blue pillows and floor mat were the perfect addition for the accent of blue on this pretty bed.

The characters included a Zeelandia sugar paste rabbit, mouse, hedgehog, squirrel, cat and piglet all from the Sylvanian Family collection. I matched the outfits as closely as possible to the photos Janita sent me and then popped two of the happy creatures on their comfy bed and the remaining four on the wood embossed sugar paste floor. The baby hedgehog stole my heart with her cute hair do and gorgeous dress. Janita was once again delighted with this cake for her daughter and the best compliment ever was her saying that she loves ordering cakes from me as it makes her feel like a child again!

Bride & Groom, Romance & Lace

Bride & Groom (Lace) Figurines

Inspired by the photo of this bride’s exquisite lace dress for her wedding day, the groom’s elegant suit and the fun photos of this couple together, I created this Bride and Groom Sugar Paste Couple for Mandy-Lou of Annah-Fudge Gourmet Cupcakes.  After having tried every sugar paste available on our South African market for modelling faces and figurines, I am delighted to say I finally found one that is just so easy to use for modelling and that is, Zeelandia Sugar Paste. It is not quite as magnificent as the Italian modelling paste I have been privileged to use but it rushes up to the winning post as a really close 2nd.  It is beautifully pliable and does not get the cracks and quick drying out flaws that our other pastes so easily get. It also colours beautifully with gel and powder colours. A huge thank you to Kelly Jayne’s in Decor Park for stocking this wonderful paste, it has made a huge difference to the quality of my modelling work and is saving me loads of  time with it being so easy to use. No more tearing my hair out to create beautiful faces! These 2 characters perfectly show off the soft translucency of this paste for figurine work.

Bride & Groom (Lace) Figurines

The Zeelandia paste was also perfect for this bride’s dress as I needed it to fall as elegantly and simply as the actual wedding dress. I draped the paste on my petite figurine and then added the lace detail of the dress by first making some lace using the Crystal Candy Midnight Garden Lace Silicone Mould and their Crystal Lace-Signature Blend. The lace mimicked the intricate details of the brides lace dress and with this lace detail I was able to capture the open lacey back of the dress with the added pearls for the button detail. No wonder this sugar bride looks so beautifully radiant and serene showing off her gorgeous dress. The sugar groom was not to be totally outshone by his bride and he is proudly wearing his long-tailed jacket and bright purple cravat and waist coat. Once again Zeelandia paste to my rescue for the soft cuff, tails and collar details of his crisp white shirt. Wishing this couple all joy and love as they begin their journey as husband and wife!
