Granny Sugar Art Figurine!

Granny Figurine Sugar ArtIvana’s mom-in-law traveled to South Africa from Portugal to celebrate her 80th birthday with her family here. Ivana wanted to make a special cake for her and she asked me to make the figurine to add to this birthday cake. I had a picture of granny and was told that she was a young 80 year old, fun-loving, spirited and always well-dressed.  I made this figurine based on all that information and she turned out perfectly for Ivana’s delicious chocolate mousse cake. I had to include a few life-lines in her face and I gave her a pair of wire glasses to complete her look. The extra flowers for the cake I made in the peach, pale blue and vibrant yellow sugar paste that I used for her outfit. I was delighted to hear that granny loved her cake and figurine and that this little endearing figure made it safely all the way back home to Portugal! Thanks Ivana for trusting me with such an important celebration in your family!

Angela’s Birthday Fairy!

Angela's Birthday Fairy

Angela,s birthday was celebrated in Wacky Wednesday Scrapbooking style a while ago and I made her a delicious chocolate cake iced in layers of vanilla, cappucino and chocolate buttercream which turned out to be quite delicious. The cake needed a little sugar paste tree stump for the little Angela fairy to kneel on and it was fairly easy to make the chocolate sugar paste look like a tree stump with some carving for the bark and for the circles. Angela loves roses and her garden is so beautiful so I added peach and blue roses and flowers around the tree stump. I think I managed to capture a bit of Angela’s spirit in this fairy as she is tall, elegant with a beautifully gentle face and funky dark hair. As she loves blue I chose this whimsical blue for her dress and added little rolled roses to the waist. We have loved getting to know you this past year, Angela, and love the kindness and fun you bring into the class.

Winnie the Pooh Cupcakes for Blair!

Winnie the Pooh Cupcakes

Bright colours were the order of the day for Blair’s birthday and she asked me to do Winnie the Pooh Cupcakes for her celebration.  I used chocolate moulds to create these cute characters and then added their eyes, noses and details with sugar paste and gel food colouring. Dainty colourful flowers on some of the cupcakes complemented this theme and Blair was delighted to have these cupcakes to share with her guests. Thanks again Blair for another fun order!

16th Birthday Cupcakes!

Rex's 16th Birthday Cupcakes

Rex’s mom asked me to make cupcakes to celebrate his 16th birthday and she gave me as his interests: rugby, fishing, water polo and music to be included as decorations on his cupcakes. I made the rugby balls, fish and fishing rods and signs and water polo balls out of sugar paste and then decorated some cupcakes with denim shorts with his initial, 16’s and lions and crowns to complete the themed cupcakes for his special day. I hope you had as much fun Rex on your 16th birthday as I had making your cupcakes!

French Girl Class

Ooh La La … My Little French Girl!

French Girl Sugar Art ClassWhat a fun 2 day course we had with Vicci of Victoria Bean Bakery learning to craft her Little French Girl out of sugar paste last Thursday and Friday. Vicci just oozes sugar art talent and her passion for everything she does in life is highly contagious. Not only is she an amazing baker and sugar artist but she is a wife, mom, friend and now also a teacher of her amazing skills. We have been admiring Vicci’s characters for a while now and we were all delighted when she announced her new class. Not only did we learn so much from this amazingly talented sugar artist but we learned from each other as we chatted about our own cake and sugar art experiences, all priceless information you can’t pick up from a book! Above are a couple of pictures of Vicci demonstrating her French Girl on a ruffled cake and below you can see Vicci’s delightful character winning her way into our hearts.
