Blair & Duncan’s Wedding Cake & Macarons

Wedding Cake - Blair & Duncan

Sitting in a warm coffee shop in a freezing cold London in Dec 2017 together with Blair was the first I heard of Blair’s plans for her wedding back in Johannesburg. What a contrast to the beautiful August day a few months later that Blair and Duncan shared for their wedding here in South Africa with family and friends. When Blair mentioned a cupcake tower for her wedding cake, I had only tried macarons a few times and had given a few classes and demos on how to make them. As Blair was adamant I was making her cake, I set out to perfect these tiny (often troublesome) bites of deliciousness.

My inspiration was Blair’s choice of an Autumn Sunset colour palette and Carol Anne’s meticulous planning of every detail of this wedding & her choice of flowers that would bring to life the colour palette. The result was a colourful ombre macaron tower topped with the wedding cake with an array of sugar paste flowers. The final flourish was the B & D initial topper cut by Rebecca at The Crazy Lemon to match the initials on the wedding invitation. I painted the back of the clear cut initials to match the invite colour.

I chose to make  a peachy coral rose, yellow and purple ranunculus and white sweet peas to top the white fondant cake.

The macarons in the matching colours were from top to bottom; blue – Flavour Nation Hazelnut, purple – Flavour Nation Grape, berry – Flavour Nation Mixed Berry, peach – Flavour Nation Naartjie and mustard – Flavour Nation Passion Fruit. Huge thanks to Andre Sonnekus who photographed the macarons so beautifully. More of the perfect moments Andre captured will be featured in my next post.

Thank you again Blair for the opportunity to be part of your wedding day in such a special and colourful way!

GTR Tyre Cake

GTR Tyre Cake

A week after researching Softball gloves for Megan’s Birthday, I was google spotting for images of GTR tyres for Mitchell’s birthday cake. This cake was quite a challenge for an artist who selects her new car because it is available in a gorgeous shade of passion red! As usual google never fails with a variety of images and with these and photos Irene sent of Mitchell’s car, I set to work on this Tyre Cake for Mitchell. Set on a grey stone look-a-like cake board, I was so excited when the cake started resembling a tyre with printed edible GTR logo and Mitchell’s name. Thanks Irene for this brilliant challenge for Mitch’s 30th Birthday and for trusting me to get it right!

Softball Birthday Cake for Megan

Softball Birthday Cake

This Softball Birthday Cake was a ‘homerun’ of a cake for Megan’s birthday earlier this year. It is always fun to have a challenge to create something new from chocolate modelling paste and this softball glove and ball were new for me. The closest I have got to anything softball has been to admire the photo accolade of Megan being chosen to play for Gauteng Softball while she was a school softball athlete. The chocolate modelling paste was easily formed into this glove … I had a real one to guide me for the shaping, stitching and lacing … my stitching tool came in handy and strips of black modelling chocolate were perfect to finish off the lacing detail.

This sport has remained a passion for Megan through her years of study at university and it was such a fun idea her mom had to use this as the theme for her celebration cake. It was a pleasure to create this cool cake for you Megan.

Basset Wedding Couple

Basset Wedding Couple Cake Topper

These 2 sugar Bassets completely stole my heart and it was hard to let them go on their merry way to celebrate a wedding. This is another story where my client, Nicole, asked me to make a Basset Wedding Couple in sugar for her sister’s wedding. Not being a natural at creating animals, I was hesitant to accept the order and then not be able to capture the cute spirit of the 2 bassets in the photograph Nicole sent me. With my client’s faith in me, I hand modeled these 2 characters and finished the shy but pretty bride basset with her rose lace veil and her dashing groom with his top hat and jacket. Thanks Nicole for allowing me to breath some sugar life into your family bassets for such a beautiful wedding.

Bikini Girl Figurine for Erin

Bikini Girl Figurine

Erin chose this cute sugar paste figurine in a bikini to add to the Beach themed cake her granny was making for her 13th birthday.  Using my trusted Saracino modelling paste, I modelled a sugar version of Erin with gorgeous strawberry blonde sugar hair, gorgeous smile and pretty eyes framed with a sprinkling of sun kissed freckles. No beach girl is complete without a colourful towel to sit elegantly on so out came my embossing tools to create the lime green towel for the dainty figurine.

It was brilliant to hear you had such a fun party Erin and thanks Darryn for the photos of the completed cake with the bikini girl figurine.

Ballerina Music Box

Ballerina Music Box Sugar Art

The theme of Music automatically brought to mind a beautiful music box I was given as a child. On winding the key, the ballerina figurine turned slowly and came to a stop as the music stopped. This box is a reminder of how we need to continue to turn our own keys in order to keep the dance that is our lives in motion.

I placed her on a sugar creation of a vintage music box to remind me of the beauty of all the valued memories of my childhood. It was a perfect musical ending to receive a Silver, 2nd Place Award in the Intermediate Sugar Art Section for her at the Hostex 2018 – SACDG Competition 2 weeks ago.

As the Hostex 2018 opened its doors at Gallagher Estate this year, we were treated to an array of delectable treats, new products and everything else related to food and drink catering. The South African Cake Decorators Guild hosted their competition with all entries both cake and sugar art falling into the theme of music. Every entry portrayed a unique meaning within the theme for each decorator and it was interesting to see so many varied interpretations of the theme. Thank you to Hostex and SACDG, the judges and all the sponsors for giving us a platform to show our passion for decorating.

My figurine’s petite body, I modelled using Saracino Modelling Paste, once again just love the paste for modelling figurines. I dressed her in a delicate pink tutu adorned with patterns of Crystal Candy Lace. I was so excited to be the first to use this new Bas Relief Mould from Crystal Candy and the detail of the leaves, lace and hearts created the perfect finish to my vintage music box. Thank you Ray for letting me use this mould and can’t wait for the release of these totally awesome new Bas Relief Moulds!
