‘Fantastical’ Bug Cupcakes

Cute Bug Cupcakes

I am not sure if this post is about keeping it all in the cupcake family or keeping the family in cupcakes, as Michelle trusted me with yet another order for a family celebration. This time it was Cute Bug Cupcakes or as Michelle nicknamed them, ‘Fantastical’ Bug Cupcakes for her granddaughter’s first birthday party. Ava is as cute as a button and deserved to be surprised with her fantasy sugar paste butterflies, ladybugs, dragonflies, worms and bees all in soft shades of pastel pink, blue, yellow and green.

As usual, I was so touched by Michelle’s thank you message to me….

“Ava couldn’t stop squealing with delight when she saw her ‘fantastical’ bug birthday cupcakes . . . one very happy tiny customer! Once again a huge thank you from our family for adding the ‘sparkle’ to yet another of our gatherings. No celebration would be the same without your creative talent setting the theme and adding just the right amount of whimsy. A flutter of butterfly thank you kisses from all of us.”

Two ‘bees in a pod’ below resting sweetly on their fantasy leaves, cute pink and yellow butterflies with their embossed wings and cheeky snails completed this array of baby insects for Ava’s cupcakes.

My thank you from Candy and Ava…

“I just wanted to thank you for making the most incredible cupcakes for Ava’s first birthday. You really are phenomenal and they added ‘sparkle’ to a very special day! Thanks again, love Candy and Ava”

My Cake Duchess Floraison Class Cake

My Cake Duchess Floaraison Course Cake

Following on from my previous post, I can’t wait to show you my completed cake after 5 days work learning to make these beautiful sugar paste flowers with Sumaiya Omar of The Cake Duchess.  It was sweet sugar heaven when I added my carefully made roses,  rose buds, rananculus, David Austin roses, hydrangeas, sweet peas, tendrils and branches and saw just how much I had learnt in the week. The bass relief on the cake completed the floral theme of this cake. What a journey it has been from following your work Sumaiya, with many oohs and aahs, to eventually having had the privilege to have done a course with you.

Cake Duchess Floraison: Sugar Flower Art Course

Cake Duchess Floraison Sugar Flower Art Course

Thank you to all my family, friends and clients for being so patient with me last week as I lost myself in the sweet realms of sugar flower art.  Sumaiya Omar better known as The Cake Duchess has hands that breath life into any sugar flower in the most beautiful way. Her wedding and celebration cakes are breathtakingly beautiful and elegant and her work is inspirational. I was so privileged to take part in her Floraison: Sugar Flower Art Course last week. What a gorgeous treat from my husband to be able to take a week and focus on learning from Sumaiya. Sumaiya you presented your course so beautifully in a tranquil environment and spoilt us with delicious edibles to keep us energised each day. Your teaching skills are amazing and what I learnt was invaluable.

Each course I attend always brings new and interesting people into my sugar world so not only was I delighted to learn from Sumaiya, who is an award winning cake artist, but I met two new students, Nafeesah and Faheema.  Being the gorgeous women we all are, we chatted a great deal over the week and learnt so much from each other, Sumaiya being abundantly generous with her knowledge and the three of us sharing our own stories. Nafeesah, pictured above, worked so neatly and quickly, transferring the traits she needs in her own profession to her sugar art work. You are an inspiration in how to truly multi task and do everything with care and precision. I will always picture you with that beautiful yellow David Austin rose!

Faheema, pictured below, this was the calm before the storm in this picture and boy you made us laugh when you announced you wanted to go home after the ‘fun’ of putting your first flower into the cake. Just so glad you didn’t as what a stunning cake you made! I love how you so calmly and patiently learnt a totally new skill, never having done sugar flowers, producing a colourful and pretty cake after the week. Your love of colour and style definitely shows in your sugar work!

The three of us here, tired but inspired after the week ready to take our cakes home. Thanks again Sumaiya for your gentle humility in teaching us these flowers and sharing your skills with us …. now it is just up to us to practice!

Chocolate Delight & Cream 80th Cake

Chocolate Delight & Cream Flowers 80th Cake

As usual, a pleasure baking for your family celebrations Vee! You chose this delicious rich chocolate cake with Amarula buttercream for your mom’s 80th Birthday.  I love that you chose the cream flowers as they contrasted so beautifully against the combed chocolate buttercream. Espresso mini meringues and chocolate balls, cream fondant rope detail and an embossed cream cake board completed the cake for this occasion.

Thanks Teigh and Carmen for my birthday voucher from Hostess Pro . I was so chuffed to be able to get this rope mould (among others) to add to my collection, it is always fun to have something different to finish off my cakes. Vanessa has such a wonderful selection to choose from so my just have to take another drive out to her shop in Pretoria!

White Ruffle Flower Birthday Cake

White Ruffle Flower Birthday Cake

Simple but effective vanilla bean with vanilla buttercream cake for Ona’s mom’s 50th Birthday. This was an all white cake with softly ruffled sugar paste flowers & pearlized chocolate balls for decoration. I used a mixture of non-pereils and pearls from Jodees to sprinkle on the top of the cake and to finish off the cake board and some of the smaller flowers.

Sweet words of thanks from Ona: “Hi Lisa. The cake was lovely! Everyone enjoyed it! And my mom loved how it looked..100%. It literally was the cherry on the top! Thank you so much.”

Orange Ruffle Flower Cake for Tanya

Orange Ruffle Flower Cake

As Tanya was going to be travelling around the world to celebrate her birthday, we decided to have an early 50th Birthday party for her and this was the cake I made to mark her grand old 50 years on this earth. Tanya loves orange and chocolate so a chocolate ganached cake with frilled flowers in shade of orange was perfect for her. I snuck in just a tasty bit of extra orange into the buttercream by adding fresh orange zest and Cointreau Liquer. Thank you Tanya for all the years of friendship, sharing school days when our boys were younger (how can we forget their crazy market days together?) and now sharing precious days where we catch up during our crazy schedules. Enjoy all the 50th Birthday celebrations to follow with your family and have a wonderful trip.

A huge thank you to Ray of Crystal Candy for another innovative product, her Crystal Candy Edible Flakes. I chose her Edible Flakes in Rose Gold to decorate the ganache and to cover the cake board for this cake. These dainty flakes of gold contrast here so beautifully with the rich chocolate and they just melt in your mouth so don’t affect the taste of the cake in any way. Here’s to our Golden Oldie of a friend (only kidding Tanya!!!)

Craig & Anthea’s Wedding Cake

Craig & Anthea's Wedding Cake

Thank you Craig and Anthea for putting all your trust in me to create your wedding cake and cupcakes. It was so cool to be able to take your 2 personalities, your characteristics & your wonderful spirit (excuse the pun here!) for life and translate them all into a unique cake for your celebration. I was also under pressure to get this order just perfect in order to live up to Anthea’s excitement of the design we came up with together. This cake was also a way to say a huge thank you to Craig for all the years he has waved his magic scissors and creative hands to make my hair feel & look wonderful. Yes he has had to put up with years of my fussy Leo ways but he manages it really well imparting his own gems of jokes and comments! There is never a dull moment in any visit to Cutz Hair Studio.

Craig & Anthea's Wedding Cake

I had so much inspiration for the sugar replicas of this amazing couple as Anthea sent me photos of her wedding dress, Craig’s suit details and also Liyah’s pretty dress for their treny sangria and grey colour schemed winter wedding at The Bridge Wedding Venue. I loved the detail in Anthea’s dress from the flattering bodice & detailed diamante waist brooch to the soft folds of the white fabric layers overlaying each other.  Thank goodness for the amazing Zeelandia Paste I used to create these sugar folds. Anthea’s rose tattoo, I created with a miniature rose stamp and edible colour and Craig’s tattoo was hand painted on his neck. Anthea asked me to include the Tequila theme in the design of the cake and I was so excited when I sourced this antique looking miniature Tequila bottle. As a surprise for them both, I included a love note in the tiny bottle. The beautiful words on the note are there own words for each other I copied from their tattoos…. “I have looked at you in millions of ways and loved you in each.”

It was really special to be able to have this sweet Liyah figurine sitting demurely on the board of the cake. I haven’t met Liyah, but the photos of her showed a gorgeous young girl with soft long hair. All the figurines I made using Saracino Modelling Paste, and Face and Figurine molds from (Sweet Revolutions by Domy).

The cupcake toppers were an exciting mix of sangria and grey ruffled flowers, embossed hearts and lemon slices and wedges to continue the tequila theme. I added sugar crystals along with the lemon wedges to complete the spirited feel of these cupcakes! I loved every part of this cake creation and Anthea loved their cake so much she didn’t want to cut it! Here’s a huge thumbs up to an awesome and crazy couple, I raise my tequila glass to you and wish you only amazing adventures together and as a family.

Andrea’s thank you to me was so special:

“Lisa you truly made this cake even more beautiful than I could ever have imagined it would be! Your skills as well as your perfectionist nature just shone through on this beautiful creation! Thank you so much for your beautiful contribution to our magical day, our figurines are currently sitting in our lounge on a special little perch and everytime we walk past them, we cannot help but smile as it takes us back to our precious wedding day!”
